My shrink taught me this silly thing. It sounds stupid but it takes you out of your thoughts for about 5 minutes when your feeling awful.

 

First you list 5 things you hear. Then 5 things you feel. Then 5 things you see. Any order is fine.

Then 4 things you hear. 4 things you feel. 4 things you see. Do this until your down to zero things.

 

Example: I hear, the TV, a dog barking, the clock ticking, a truck running, the phone ringing. I feel the computer, my shoes, my heartbeat, a soda can (decaf of course  ;)) , a itch on my head. I see the computer screen, a pig stuffed animal, my wedding ring, a picture of my daughter, a tree.

Continue doing that. It sounds silly but alot of times it makes me feel calmer.
