Writing a book maybe - need your help

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys - I'm praying hard right now about whether or not to write a book on recovery - something very thorough.

If I do this, I want it to be conversational - just the way I write here on the forum.  Layman's terms.  Encouraging. Real.  Scientific, but comprehendible.  Nothing overly confusing.

I am praying first of all - to see if this is God's plan - for me to write this.

And secondly - if it is, I want your help to know what to be SURE to include in the book. What did you want to "have" or to "know" as you embarked on recovery.  What did you spend hours searching the forum to find?  What did you want or need to know?

I have my own ideas, but if this is going to work, I am going to put up a few huge posterboards and print out your comments and include them in the pre-writing/planning process.

If you would - please let me know what you think - in general.

Should Parker write a book?

If so, what do *I* want to see included that would be a help?

This may or may not be God's plan for me.  I feel pulled in this direction, but I am still waiting on hearing from God on this before I go off thinking I can be an author.

Thanks, guys,

:)Parker

Hi Parker....Cool!!! I think you should do it!!! Esp. since Bliss Johns just closed her website..we need more people spreading the word about this.

What helped me was hearing others peoples stories and hearing that they recovered. Also, what they have gained from the experience. A list of normal symptoms helped alleviate my fears... It would be cool to make the book and then make a "workbook" for people going through it... Like a book to draw in, and write positive affirmations, or a place to put your favorite success stories, maybe some CBT or ACT stuff.

Great idea, I really hope this works out. If I can help in any way, I would be happy to!

Depends on the purpose and target market of the book. I am assuming it a recovery guide written for people who are going through benzo wd?

Parker, write the book. Just write the book. I repeat, with emphasis, write the book.  ;)

Maranatha, where have YOU been? Please also write the book!

I suggest if you're going to write a book, do it for yourself and others.

It has nothing to do with god's plan.

If you find enjoyment in doing something, why would that have anything to do with god?

I'm sure you would be really good at writing any kind of book. You're very talented in writing and getting points across. :)

I just don't understand what god has to do with it. Sorry:(

Thank you everyone. :)  I really appreciate your input.

This would be a thorough multi-faceted approach to addressing benzo recovery, but with a more in-depth account and with more in-depth explanations than I have seen written about before.

Parker, I think that is an awesome plan you have. Your posts have helped so many of us here and you are able to explain everything so well. I do hope you go ahead with the idea and if you need your prayers answered from God to do the work then I hope that you do as that seems important to you

Parker,

this time i agree with Billy--just do it. if it's a desire, then God put there in the first place. i have this desire too. i feel i have to write about my experience since i've had two lives that feel like a thousand that have to do with benzo withdrawal. just try to have as much research down pat so be prepared to answer any and all questions. you have so much to give to people about all the supplements you have already researched. you can put a portion of 'What's Happening in Your Brain" in there. i have an idea for mine and you can have it as well--i was thinking (with certain people's permission) to put some people's posts in the book.

I said thinking about it :tickedoff: just kidding! great idea Parker! it will be a smash :) and best seller!

Hi Parker,

I think you should do it - it would be such a service to this most excluded of communities.

You're a marvellous writer; you have done the very hard yards of withdrawal; and you have a gift for explaining complex scientific concepts to non-specialists.

I wish you well in your reflections and prayers.

Warmly,

joe90.

I thought about writting a book of just recovery stories. and  lump them into side effect categories.....like if your main symptom is depression go to this chapter. if your main symptom was anxiety or insomnia or akathesia go to these chapters.  success stories are great but the reason I don't go to the success story board here is that I don't have the patience  to read through 100 really long success stories to find one I can relate to. yes the other ones are inspiring, but I just want the ones that sound like me.and what I am going through.....I wish people would word their success stories like that or that benzo buddies was organized more like that.  so I guess that is what I would like to see in a book a section like that.....my benzo brain just can't sift through a 100 stories to find the one I need.....Alabama.xo p.s. I think you'd be a great author parker.

Parker,

definitely write the book. I am sure God wants this to happen. I am sure it will be a very difficult book to write as there are so many variables when coming off Benzos.

Whether or not you decide to write the book is up to you - or God, if you want to put it that way, although on that question I land alongside Billy and Daisys - but I think you should.

And to that end: I've been a publishing author since I was 17, mostly "creative nonfiction" but I'm working on a PhD in behavioral ecology so my current work is all scientific in nature.... which, for ideological compensation and to keep my head from coming apart, I have been balancing for the past few years with forays into comedy writing. (I'd link to some of my material on here but it has my real name on it and there's an anathema against sharing personal information on BB, especially now that Dr. Douche-Little is back up to his old antics.)

Sooo yeah, my opinion is write the book, and if there's anything I can do to help please don't hesitate to PM me!

Dear Parker,

You should write a book.

Love,

God

;D

Okay, that wasn't really God. It was me.

God probably doesn't even an account here.  :(

Parker, it's a huge undertaking, so kudos to you for seriously considering it. I think you're certainly capable.

You write well. You're full of knowledge. You have a remarkable gift for expressing your inherent compassion without being condescending, and for being encouraging without being harsh.  :smitten:

Plus, you somehow manage to explain benzo brains to people with benzo brains.  :o

Are you thinking of writing your personal story? That might be the best way to provide some guidance without giving medical advice, which is probably something you'd want to avoid (much the way it works on the forum).

Whatever book you're thinking of writing, it sounds to me like it's been nagging you for a while. If that's the case, you probably don't have any choice.  ;)

Book--------->>>GREAT idea.  And VERY marketable.

And I hope you not only write your personal story, I hope you include some of the specific things you did that helped you get through it. That way you are giving people that great information you've done so much research on without actually giving medical advice. People can take it or leave it, as do we all on most things.

Your information has been MOST helpful to me. It would be nice to have it available and accessible to those who will never find it here at this site.    :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Parker,

Write the book! I like the workbook idea where people can list symptoms and then figure out how to cope with them, plus success stories- case studies, explanations of what's happening in your brain, common side effects, tapering schedules that work, a list of benzo wise doctors and resources. Write the book... and then make sure that sick people who don't visit bookstores very often can find it!!!  :)

opinion its an absolute MUST: good luck

If you can take an objective approach, by which I mean do not include the word 'God' anywhere, except in a seperate chapter dedicated to withdrawal and religion/belief, so that it can benefit anyone, with any, or no belief system, then- and only then- it is "God's will" that you should write it ;)

I think an e-book would be great. You would have thousands of customers just from this BB. Or a website from which you sell the e-book.

I forgot -- please leave God out of it. I know that would turn me off. I would want to read how YOU (and by extension, us) had the strength to withstand this withdrawal. If I thought I would have to have God to help me, I wouldn't read the book, as I am not a Christian. I would want to read how an ordinary person got the guts to go through this . . . with help from friends and family, of course. And what they went through and what they learned. How they got through the tough times. All that. Sorry if this offends you, but whenever I read a post that references God, I cringe. And move on to the next one.

Parker write that book,it is desperately needed; don't let all of your suffering be in vain.Your book may save someones life. When I first came here,I wanted to know that I would heal, was there anything that would ease my suffering, that I was not damaged forever.I'm contiplating writing a book from a different standpoint.I want to write from a blow the whistle standpoint.I wish I had the resources to write this book an give them all out for free as a public service.
