Dysautonomia

Anyone have symptoms of dysautonomia during withdrawal or been diagnosed with dysautonomia? I was diagnosed with dysautonomia soon after my taper.

Excessive fatigue

Excessive thirst (polydipsia)

Lightheadedness, dizziness or vertigo

Feelings of anxiety or panic (not mentally induced[citation needed])

Rapid heart rate or slow heart rate

Orthostatic hypotension, sometimes resulting in syncope[1] (fainting)

Sounds identical to benzo wd... Are your symptoms lessening over time? Or do they wax and wane? I think that would be the deciding factor but the symptoms are very similar huh

Hi, Racefan.

I was just doing some research on this myself today. I was talking to another BB who suggested that my some of my symptoms resemble POTS, which is a form of dysautonomia.

I have been dx'd with sinus tachycardia, and I get it upon even the least exertion.  I am hoping to avoid having to take any medication (beta blocker, calcium channel blocker), and just wait it out as I never had any of these symptoms prior to using or withdrawing from Xanax.

What did your doc prescribe for your condition?  Are your symptoms improving?

I thought of you waiting... It seems obvious in your situation that it is wd.  :tickedoff:

Thanks for the replies. I see a dysautonomia specialist now. Kind of odd I was diagnosed with this at the same time as my withdrawal. I'm thinking maybe dysautonomia can be caused by benzo withdrawal. My doctor added Zebeta which heals with the racing heart and palpitations.

Maybe you don't even need the med anymore!

Waiting and Gettingthere my symptoms are the same. No improvement in the dysautonomia but I sure hope the longer I stay off benzos the better it gets. I really think the surge in POTS and Dysautonomia are due to benzos..So many people take these drugs for various conditions and end up sicker than before.

Strange... I'm sorry you are dealing with that, the symptoms seem so similar to benzo wd, but you would expect that it would have lessened by now...

count me in - diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome - POTS shortly after my ativan w/d but even the drs I'm seeing don't agree amongst themselves regarding my diagnosis

i've read a bunch of stories here on BB about people having symptoms similar to mine when I was diagnosed so I'm inclined to think that there is something worth exploring

I looked for literature to back up my suspicions, but i couldn't really find anything straightforward

I am currently on propranolol and that helps at times, but not to the point I can say I've found my 'cure'.

Yes, racefan, they do "shred our CNS".  Well said.

I am going to try to stay drug free if possible.  I am just wondering if tachycardia over an extended period of time can damage the heart.

I wish you a speedy recovery, Racefan.

here is what one of my drs - a cardiologist - told me - if your heart is structurally sound, the tachy is the equivalent of a good workout ...only without the workout

If the tachy is bothersome and it comes with more symptoms - chest pain, shortness of breath etc, you might want to have that properly evaluated just in case.

benzos can shred both our central, our autonomic nervous systems as well as everything else in our bodies ...lovely meds!

Thanks for the additional information, Amy.  I really appreciate it.  I do have chest pain with occassional shortness of breath.  I have just chalked everything up to benzo wd.

I did have an echocardiogram that showed what they called a "slight abnormality", but they then chalked that up to a shadow on the ultrasound.

I think I will continue to push forward.  I think everything is wd, and I honestly think that recovery takes a very, very long time.

What are your sx Racefan-do you have severe fatigue? I have all those sx that were listed in the second post. I was hoping it was just w/d and not something more serious (long-term) caused by withdrawal. :( I am sorry it hasnt improved for you. You had been off Benzos over 3 years -is that right?

Thanks Tina. Yes I still have severe fatigue along with all the others listed in the second post. I have been off the benzos for over 3 years but have been off Remeron only 14 months. Remeron is as close to a benzo as you can get in my opinion even though it is an antidepressant.  Hope you continue to heal.
