Doctors knowleadge about benzo withdrawal?

5 months ago I started a program at the hospital with substitution treatment for opiate addiction where they didnt allow the use of benzo.

I asked the doctor what kind of withdrawal symptoms I could expect and he asked how much I had used wich is 2 mg Klonazepam daily. The answer was that with such a low dose I shoudnt experince any serious withdrawal.

This wasnt true at all i noticed. If any doctor should know I thought it was a doctor working with drug dependece.

I have often been thinking that I would wanna talk to a doctor about my benzo withdrawal problems. Not that I think there is any help to get but to learn a little more what i can expect and be reasured that I will get better. But after meeting this doctor that were a "specialist" on drug addiction I wonder how much doctors in general really know about it.

I was never prescribed benzo. Do the doctors that prescribe benzo usually know alot about the withdrawal, If someone here knows?

That's a good question. Neither of my doctors who rxd it knew. Makes me wonder if some people can just get of it easily. I have never heard anyone say they have, but then many people just stay on the medication. I was told and read that others were told that you can stay on it for life. Not so much.

O think they know.  when I asked psyche nurse about my ringing ears she said she didn't know.

Am I the only person on Benzos to get ringing ears/tinnitus??

The probs you get on them and getting off seem to be hushed up imo

I agree. My MD STARTED me on 2 mg xanax twice a day! It was for muscle spasms. I was already taking Soma 350 mg plus Vicodin 7.5/500 mg 3 to 4 daily. Not only did he not know about benzo withdrawal, I was lucky I didn't die as this cocktail has killed before.

My first doctor... after we talked for about a half hour... automatically put me on 5 mgs of asst benzos.  He mentioned to be careful with the xanax but, then said make sure to take it daily.  When he retired and I went to a new doctor she was shocked I had been on so many benzos and said to quit klonopin.  So, I did.  When, a month later, I returned and told her I was in sheer hell from K wd she said "oh i am sure it is horrible to get off".  I thought that was a strange response. However, I am glad to be free of it.  I think she knew there was wd but, since she had never "lived" it she probably didn't understand the severity of it.

Heh....2mg of K is NOT a low dose. Hell, I wouldn't even consider .5 a "low" dose. I was averaging 1mg or less for a period of 3?? years and am still dealing with benzo wd after nearly 2 years. And early on it my symptoms were horrific and debilitating. Only regained significant function around 18 months off.

You're not the only person that has tinnitus.  I'm sorry that you're still having to deal with this as far out as you are.  I've had it for almost a year now and I even updosed back to 2mg so I could return to work and get in a better 'place' to begin another taper.  My doc tells me that I have arthritis in my jaw and that is the one and only reason that my ears ring ...yeah, right!  Still experience other symptoms as well, they usually come and go but the ringing always, always stays.  Hope you feel better soon, Gardenia!

Flutter,

Just when I think I've heard everything, the statement from the Dr. saying you had arthritis in your jaw and that was the cause of your tinnitus tops them all.  Guess all of us that have tinnitus have arthritis in our jaws too.  Have had the ringing ears since tapering from Valium almost a year ago.  It only gets louder when I'm starting to have an adrenaline rush (panic/anxiety).  It lets up a bit after the rush is over, but none the less, I still have it.  I still can't believe he/she made that idiotic statement.

Woe

You can imagine my surprise to find out that folks actually get arthritis in their jaw and I was one of them  :o  ...he said that it came from chewing gum, talking too much, eating steak or 'chewy' foods ...stuff like that, he looked so dog gone sincere.  For one, I've never been fond of gum, I've never been much of a 'talker' and after almost losing everything I own from my earlier c't and then taper.  I'm saving $ for next taper/recovery ...steak is not an option for me right now lol.  He even prescribed medication for it, I declined.  I know what you mean about adrenaline rushes and it only becoming louder, my heart goes out to you.  Hopefully it will pass soon for you and Gardenia.  It's the pits for sure!
