Any one on Remeron(Mirtazapine)

[...]

Recommended Posts

Hey DD. I have been prescribed Remeron in the past at low doses for insomnia. It does help with sleep, or at least it did for me until I had to c/t off of Klonopin. I currently am not on any medications, which is quite a feat in this day and age, but I am desperate for sleep. I keep thinking that each night I will finally be able to crash because the human body has to have rest or all sorts of things go wrong, and each night I'm disappointed. I've been off of benzos since 12/23/2011 with a horrible w/d relapse in August due to a prescription medicine called Fioricet so I don't think I can blame benzos completely. I've been under a lot of stress so that coupled with lingering benzo w/d symptoms is probably what's going on. I'm actually going to take some Remeron tonight, though I'm not too sure how well it will work. I've also taken Benadryl for sleep, and it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. I always thought Remeron acted on the same GABA sites on benzos, but I've read some posts by other people who say it doesn't. I will due the research on it for my own piece of mind. If you need to vent or talk to someone, please message me, and I will reply. We are all here for each other :)

1)  When I have sleep problems, I take 7.5 mg Remeron, and it puts me right to sleep.

2)  Remeron does not act on the same receptors as benzos.

Hi Builder

I think we have posted each other before with regards to Remeron I could be wrong,I am surprised that 7.5 mg helps you to sleep as I was told 15 mg was a starting dose,Had phone call from doctors after having blood tests showing above normal levels and am having to taper off my 15 mg now down to 13 mg using liquid as I have liver and pancreas issues, due to see specialist in 2 weeks time.

dd58, hello..

My two cents worth...I was on Remeron for many months at different doses while I was still taking Ativan..(what was my doctor thinking???)..finally got off of it...AND the Ativan as well.  I'm still coping with post acute withdrawal, but am STAYING AWAY from anything I can...especially the Remeron after reading more about it.  BUT it is like just about everything..different for everyone.  The old saying  "less is more.."  In the end, we have to make our own decisions...why do we think it is called "practicing" medicine!!  Blessings, New Life

15 mg is a common starting dose for depression and/or anxiety, then often tirated up to 30, even 45 mg.  Remeron's sedative/hypnotic effect is somewhat unique in that lower doses are more sedating.  The widely held explanation is that at higher doses, it increases the neurotransmitter activity, which tends to offset the antihistaminic effect.

I no longer take it for anxiety, but use it prn for occasional sleep problems (typically 1-2 night every couple of weeks.)  I get up and  take 7.5 mg and within 15 minutes, I can literally feel my mind slowing down and in a few more minutes, I'm out.

Not everyone finds it as effective for anxiety as I did, but almost all users find it a very effective sleep aid (at lower doses)

Hi Builder,

Can you use remeron on an as-needed basis?  I thought it had to be taken consistently since it is basically an AD.

Thanks,

Ellen

I was put on the Remeron basically because I had lost a lot of weight and Remeron makes you want to eat and I was told this in psych hospital and because it was not working as an AD I was also put on Lithium carbonate which is a mood stabiliser and will be glad when I am rid of the whole lot.

Thanks,

Ellenyear, and as I posted above, its very effective

I've been taking it prn ("as needed") as a sleep aid for a year . But as  an antidepressant or anxiolytic, I feel sure you you would need to dose daily.   I took 22.5-30 mg/day for about 2 1/2 years to control my anxiety.  When my anxiety seemed to go into remission, I quickly tapered off (2 weeks), and have only used it occasionally since then as a sleep aid.

It is a basically an A/D and typically has a 2-3 week onset, so it probably isn't suitable for "as need" dosing.  Also like most A/Ds, it is also effective for anxiety.

Hi dd58:

Remeron and Lithium are known to put weight on as well as lift mood. I was on both of them and that is exactly what is did for me. I'm usually a weight loss person when it comes to ADs or AD combos for depression. Lithium is considered a good med when someone is experiencing bi-polar episodes. It is also used as a subsitute when ADs have failed. That is why my pdoc put me on Lithium to try out. I ended up gaining weight, it helped to lift my mood somewhat, but the weight gain started to depress me...so I had to go off. My mother, who was a bi-polar (more on the manic side though) was on Lithium for many decades and it helped her when she stayed on it.

In regards to Remeron/Mitrazpine:

If you look at sigs on this forum...you will see that many people who are w/d from benzos and have sleep problems do use a low dose (7.5mg) of Remeron (generic is called Mitrazapine) as a sleep aid on a per needed basis. It is always good to consider trying the name brand first instead of generic...even if it costs more. I have read on different forums and sites that SOME people who used Remeron first and got a scrip for generic later found it to be less tolerable. Try a search and you will find opinion's on it...remember that it is an individual experience though and your personal experience will be different. Best wishes.

Morning Danni

Thanks for your reply you are the first person I know who has been on both Remeron(Mirtazapine) at the same time I also hate the weight gain but everyone says that I look good  >:( I am having issues with my liver and pancreas and they have put it down to the  Mirt there was a issue whilst I was in hospital the suddenly they discharge me,mind you after being in there for 4 months I was glad to be home and now I am off to see the liver specialist in a few weeks time,I have already reduced my dose of Mirt but dare not taper two things at a time so concentrating more on Valium taper which I went on as I was on sleeping tablet Nitrazepam another benzo and they are worse to come off than Heroin.

I now have to find a taper to come off the Lithium carbonate which I was put on as Mirt  was not working as a AD it is a long story and will be doing my blog but I went c/t on two occasions and they said I was suffering from depression.
