Yes, when you've been on this medication for a long time, and you taper too fast, it can feel like acute withdrawal.

Acute doesn't only happen when you're done tapering. It can happen at any time.

It also goes the other way around, acute doesn't have to happen when you're done tapering.

(Stabilize, slow and steady. You're going too fast  ;))

I haven’t really gone to fast.

I was at 3.5 mg 12 months ago

Now at 1.25 mg

I’ve felt this way ever since I stopped drinking

Before taper. I was drinking for 1.5 years everynight

Whiskey. And then stopped. And began taper 1 months

Later. Ever since then I’ve felt that insane feeling.

Same feeling I use to get when I would miss

A dose of xan back before taper.

It’s like a feeling of being here but not here feeling.

Alcohol and benzo's both work on the same receptors.

So first you quit drinking, and then you quit benzo's. That's quite a shock for the brain!

3.5 - 1.25 = 2.25 in 12 months time. That's 2.25x20=45 mg Valium Equivalant. For someone who has been on benzo's for so long that's quite a drop.

Also here's a quote from Micedana that might help you:

'Our bodies try to go into homoeostasis (equilibrium) all the time. When we take benzos or taper them that equilibrium gets altered and we get symptoms (reactions). Some of the reactions (waves) or positive ones (windows) are part of the healing process. That's why we have to taper slow, to avoid reactions, both processes are part of healing.'

In other words: your brain is trying to be normal again after such hits from alcohol and benzo's :). And that can take a long time, it's unfortunately how the brain works.

Anyway, when holding, you also heal. I would really suggest that, until you stabilize. After that, you really should start considering partly switching to Valium and/or microtapering. When you make the partial crossover, SLOWLY. introduce the valium slowly.

Oh and one more thing. That doc of yours doesn't sound like someone who is willing to work with you.

I would suggest finding someone who will. Someone who is more educated about this stuff.

Hey, I completely empathize. My worst symptom by far is the feeling of insanity. It literally goes all the way up to being absolutely sure that I’m losing my sanity. I think of needing hospital and think of doing absolutely insane things bud the worst part of it is how believable it is and how real it seems that I’m actually losing my sanity. It’s the one symptom I wish i could fix.

Thanks. It’s awful. And I’m still tapering

And feel this way. I’ve lost my work. I can’t be around

Anyone. My life feels so over. And it’s all gonna get worse.

I can’t see myself suffering like this for years and years.

I think I have neurotoxicity.

Hi Hazzard1976,

yes the terror is recognizable. I'm in withdrawal myself, but I am in a better place now. All because I found the Ashton Manual and I'm microtapering with Diazepam (Valium). Hope you find the Ashton Manual. Hang in there!

16 years is a long time to be

On. I really can’t see me healing

From this. Not when my mind

Has been high jacked all these years

To the point where benzo don’t work at all.

I wish I was more positive. All I see

Is suffering for years and years. And years.

And prob never healing.

Check out some of the success stories.  Many of those folks had been on benzos for years and did heal. There are several people who jumped off fairly recently after long term use and are doing well. Have hope and taper slowly.

Quick answer to original question: Yes it's *normal* to feel insane from benzos. For me, too much benzo in system caused memory lapses and really strange moods.

Then, withdrawal from benzo caused a feeling of impending doom, restlessness, and often dp and dr, especially when out of the house.  And mornings are almost intolerable until I am up and about.
