xanax 3mg daily, tapered down to 10mg valium over the past year
stuck at 10mg and speaking to a psychiatrist and have some questions about their method for treatment

We are glad to have you here, welcome to the community.  Well done for getting down to 10mg Diazepam from 3 [...] Xanax!  Have you been doing a slow taper?   You will get lots of support and encouragement here.     Browse the boards and post questions, you will find plenty of  information on the forum

Reducing your daily dose by somewhere between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days is the rule of thumb. Many go slower, whatever feels comfortable. Listen to your body.
