Propranolol

How does propranolol work.?  Do you need to take it for a while to see results or will you know it works immediately?  I just don’t want to take it too long and then have to taper. Anyone here take it and when did it start working for you ?  How many mg

It’s a beta blocker

It slows down the production of adrenaline and thus slows your cns and heart rate down

I took a drug in the same class and it caused all kinds of problems with my benzos ability to work

Plus when you come off it, your adrenaline levels will spike and your heart rate will race

Mine did for nine months straight after stopping

I can’t tell you what to do but unless you really really need it, like, for your heart, I’d avoid it because they mess with the cns

I was also given Propranolol to assist with heart palpitations.

I did try it once or twice at bed time but it made me feel pretty unwell in my tummy so it wasn't really worth it.  I was prescribed 10mg and it took some time to work.

I have definitely read about others who have had success with it though :)

Tulip, about this:

This medication is for my akathesia. Leg movements and bier restlessness

What is bier restlessness? And who on earth is prescribing that drug for this condition. I take a beta blocker but it's for my bp. Sometimes they're prescribed for "palpitations" during a taper.

I'm a little worried about your taking this drug when it's not appropriate. :-\

This is a typical drug that they give POTS patients and benzo patients.

It can be used as a one off, or “pill in a pocket” is what they call it.

They tried to give it to me, I refused until my cardiologist said ok!

Well the psychiatrist said she learned from me, the cardiologist said I should never have been offered that drug as my heart rate and BP are way too low.

It does work well, but I do have a friend who reacted to it like Zman. Not everyone does.

Most can take it just fine every once in a while.

Christy Huff took it, so did Jennifer Leigh.

If I could take it to stop some symptoms I would.

A lot of people also use epsom salt baths for Akathisia!

Sometimes adjunct meds are helpful during the withdrawl process even though many of us are lothe to add more things on when we are getting off of something!  That said, I took propranolol during my taper for elevated blood pressure but I found it also helped anxiety and restlessness along with lowering my blood pressure.  My dose was very small - 20mg a couple of times a day.  I tapered off over a week or so as best I can recall.

Here is some info regarding propranolol withdrawl:

The akathasia is a rough one I understand.  If you have been seen by a Doc and you feel like you need something to relieve your sx then that’s up to you.  Nobody on here is a doctor and a lot of people on here are anti meds.  Do you have a therapist that specializes in wd not a coach but an actual specialist?  If not I recommend you get one.  I will send you a pm.  I did take propranolol for my BP and aka for about 30 months after my ct.  Yes it helped take the edge off but never took it away and as it faded I went off with no problem.  Not everyone reacts negatively.  I am not sensitive to anything.  I did learn long ago that the sx just come and go.  Try to stay away from all the negative input and constant suffering of others.  It does help. In the end time is the healer and acceptance is key.

Peace
