Need a dental bone graft/antibiotic?

Hello All,

I just had my lower back molar extracted.  He wanted to do an immediate bone graft and informed me I would be on antibiotics.I BECAME TERRIFIED and told him NO. Has anyone used a particular antibiotic for dental purposes that did NOT cause problems?

Antibiotics are just like everything else in the process, some cause problems others don't, we just can't know how you'll react until you take it.  Of course, its important to stay away from the fluoroquinolones but I've read many members can take others without problem.

If you don't get many replies, I'd use these search tips and input the antibiotic your dentist intended to put you on to see what kinds of reactions other members have had. http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=251991.0

That’s comforting news. After years of reading antibiotic setback stories, I am terrified. I will ask if amoxicillin is one of the dentist’s choices , and will get names of ab that he prescribes.

I just had to take an AB to get rid of an infection in a molar before we do a root canal prep. It was amoxycillin, which is, according to my dentist, the AB of choice for dental procedures. I am sensitive to ABs (several I can't take) but this one was okay. Just be sure to take a probiotic 2 hours AFTER you take the AB. The timing of the probiotic is important: the AB will kill off all bacteria in your microbiome, good and bad, but the probiotic will put the good ones back.

Best wishes,

Katz

Penicillins and their cousins are generally used for oral procedures.  Antibiotics like fluoroquinolones (i.e. Cipro), which tend to be used for UTIs and bowel issues, aren't the ones you see for oral procedures and they are the ones that seem to most often cause problems with benzos.

Thanks

Of course, like every topic, there are also horror stories about the 2 oral abx commonly used ie amoxicillin.  I’m so terrified at the mere possibility of going into acute, I’m highly considering no bone graft and implant on my lower back molar.  This also comes with risks overtime but my ptsd simply won’t allow me to take a medication that could potential cause hell…again..

If in doubt you can always consult with a biological dentist they use ozone instead of antibiotics for grafts and implants, I'm just someone who's been injured by augmentin and azithromycin but of course lots of people do just fine with antibiotics, it's a draw of luck..

I never knew this type of dentist existed.  Thank you

yea I didn't either until this setback, Magnolis, it's very cool, it's like a naturopath in the dental field.

When I took amoxicillin for my tooth infection and extraction, I didn't take the recommended dosage.  They wanted me to take 3 pills a day and I only took one.  It still got rid of my tooth infection.

There is a biologic dentist near me that offers ozone therapy. Does ozone therapy negate the need for antibiotics for something like a bone graft and implant?

Thank you so much for responding to my post. This now gives me some options. I had resigned myself to not replacing the tooth. Any risk of a setback is too much for me to bare.

that's how I understand it but do ask that dentist about it, good luck!

  • 2 months later...

It would be good to get recommendations from a few doctors. When I needed a surgeon I got recommendations from both the dentist and the root canal specialist. In that case one name was common and the root canal doctor even used him for his daughters wisdom teeth.

Thankfully I have no experience with implants but would do the same thing. Ask for recommendations, do some searching online , check and use your best judgement. I don't expect anything online to have perfect reviews but sometimes things pop up that you need to investigate.

Edit: Deactivated commercial link.
