Antibiotics for gum infection

[To...]

Recommended Posts

I recently had my bottom wisdom teeth extracted and now I think I have an infection in my gum on the one side. I’m afraid of taking an antibiotic, but I guess I’ll have to call my oral surgeon and see what is going on. Does anyone have any recent experience with antibiotics. I’ve read a lot on the forum and have heard mixed reviews. Some had no increase in symptoms, others minor symptoms, and some were thrown into acute withdrawal.

I haven’t posted here on a while mainly because my taper has been going fairly good. I’m now below .5mg daily and don’t want anything to disrupt my progress. My psychiatrist and therapist both have been proud of me for my progress.

I’ve read that amoxicillin is the go to antibiotic for tooth and gum infections, so I’m expecting that will be the case for me. It’s been years since I’ve taken an antibiotic and normally don’t have any adverse reactions except some minor diarrhea, but that is fairly common.

Any past experiences will be appreciated. Hope all is doing well.

I was one of those who was thrown back into the acute from antibiotics but I think I'm sensitive to antibiotics in general. I remember even as a kid I had reactions to amoxicillin (shakes). I wasn't taking benzos then.

This is by no means medical advice, but I had a tooth pulled a few years back which got infected. I didn't take anything for it as I was overseas working and didn't speak the language. It cleared on its own. It's amazing what your immune system is capable of. It's all too easy in modern society to run for an antibiotic, but our immune system has the ability to heal a lot without drugs.

Again I'm not suggesting anyone doesn't seek medical advice when they are in need. My point is more that maybe you could hold off for a little while to see how things go. I for 1 am too afraid to take an antibiotic unless it's life or death

to report back I am getting relief from GUM® PerioBalance sucking tablets.

I suggest trying those to aid in balancing the bacteria in your mouth along side of upping oral hygiene care.

I called the oral surgeon and he called in a script for amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day for 7 days, until I see him on Wednesday the 8th. That was on Tuesday and I started the antibiotic treatment. As of this writing I have taken 9 amoxicillin so far and my gums are doing much better. Swelling and pain virtually gone already. I have not had any adverse reaction yet. The first time I took one I had a little uptick in anxiety, but nothing since.

I was gonna wait and see if my immune system would take care of itself, but I recently had blood work done and it came back ANA positive. The results showed I have very low antibodies. The specialist I saw said that around 20-30% of healthy people are like this, and didn’t order anymore testing after I answered a bunch of questions and went through a physical. She said it could all be related to benzos and seemed to be knowledgeable about how damaging they can be, and just said to call back if things change or I get worse.

I figured I should take the amoxicillin before infection spread to my jaw and other places. Hopefully I won’t have any bad reactions when I stop the amoxicillin. It sucks that the only way to know if  something could be harmful or not is to try it and find out since everyone reacts differently.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will update when I stop the medication, or if anything changes.
