[Wa...]
Had really thought the trend would be for less usage by 2020. We're going backwards.
[La...]
Thanks for sharing this article. It still stuns me, though, that they call it a "hidden epidemic". I've been posting articles and studies on this topic for years. There's LOTS of evidence that these medications are over-prescribed and problematic -- and VERY problematic if prescribed with other central nervous system depressants, such as opioids -- but apparently, many doctors are in denial about what they're prescribing. And the pharmacists don't flag the dangers -- either to the doctors or to the patients themselves. As far as prescribing to seniors go, it's not a secret that these medications have particular problems for this age group. As we age, our metabolism of medication slows down, meaning it can take longer for something to clear from our system. If repeat doses are taken, then the effects can be cumulative. Seniors have other changes that are occurring in their bodies, e.g. slower reflexes, weaker muscles, poorer balance, etc. If you add up all of these factors, then you understand that seniors are more susceptible to falls, fractures and motor vehicle accidents. It's in all of the literature. Perhaps the doctors and pharmacists are not reading it, though. Completely unacceptable.
