The Sympathetic & Parasympathetic Nervous System- what they affect

Recommended Posts

We all wonder why we have so many wierd side effect  while we are stuck in the "Fight or Flight" mode with the  Sympathetic Nervous System in charge.

I ran across this "condensed list" that will give you some idea of the function of each system.

Parasympathetic Nervous System  (rest & relax)

-Constriction of pupils

-Stimulation of secretion of saliva

-Decreases the heart rate, thus, causing a drop in the blood pressure

-Constricts the bronchi and thus, decreasing the diameter of airway

-Stimulates activity of the digestive system, like stimulation of peristalsis

-Contract urinary bladder

-Stimulates Gallbladder secrtions

-Relaxes rectum

Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight)

-Dilation of pupils (light sensitivity, blurred vision)

-Inhibition of secretion of saliva (dry mouth)

-Increases the heart rate, thus, causing an increase in the blood pressure

-Dilates the bronchi, thus, increasing the diameter of airway (maybe "air hunger?)

-Inhibits activity of the digestive system, like inhibition of peristalsis (poor digestion)

-Relaxes urinary bladder (excessive urination)

-Decreases gallbladder secretions (poor digestion - nausea)

-Contracts rectum (constipation)

... another little tidbit I just ran across. Ever wonder why your feet sweat so much...?

...In a pair of feet there are normally about 250,000 sweat glands which typically produce about half a pint of perspiration a day. Sweat glands are more concentrated on the feet than in any other part of the body.
