Stability of Alprazolam in Ora Sweet and Ora Plus

I found an article discussing the stability of alprazolam (among other drugs but no other benzos) in ora sweet and ora plus mixtures.

The pharmacists made solutions of 1 mg/mL alprazolam by crushing 2 mg tablet and mixing in ora sweet:ora plus (1:1) and ora sweet sf:ora plus (1:1) mixtures. They stored some samples in a refrigerator at 5°C and at room temperature (25°C or about 75°F). They tested the mixtures at days 1, 14, 28, and 60.

They report the values as % of initial concentration.

After 60 days the mixtures were 95-96% of their initial concentration when stored at room temperature. The samples stored in the fridge were a little better at 96-97%.

Great find and share, HopeToDoThis.

Here’s a similar stability study for clonazepam, nomoredrugsforme:

Allen LV Jr., Erickson MA. Stability of acetazolamide, allopurinol, azathioprine, clonazepam, and flucytosine in extemporaneously compounded oral liquids. Am J Health-Syst Pharm. 1996;53(16):pp1944-1949.

I found the first two sections (INTRODUCTION and STABILITY) to be readable/understandable as well as interesting/helpful.

thank you Libertas

it seems Ora-Plus/HUMCO suspension vehicles are the most reliable as far as ensuring stability and preventing degradation of the API due to their preservative ingredients. i'm considering a switch to using the suspension instead of making a solution. i'm just not sure if it will be a shock to my CNS after several changes this year getting my dosing times settled and switching to various solvents/liquid formats from pills.
