Terrible Things Happen When You Stop Sleeping

I believe that in some way sleep is a key factor in benzo recovery. It's a chicken/egg thing for sure and I think it works both ways- bad sleep brings on symptoms and symptoms bring on bad sleep.

I firmly believe that we need to do whatever possible to increase our chances of getting good sleep. Lately I have been holed up in the house at my desk catching up on work so I haven't been as active as I usually am. My sleep has been bad and I am in a nasty wave. I am positive that the lack of activity has contributed to these issues.

I really, really need to get back in the gym, even if it's only for 30 minutes a few times per week. I am sure it will help me.

Yes, I agree, its a total chicken and egg thing.

Wishing you well, FG. Hopefully, you can get back in the gym soon and get some relief.

Last night I hit the gym and did 30 minutes on the treadmill. Best sleep I have had in weeks. I guess I really have no choice. If I don't manage to get a minimum level of activity in I am going to pay.

This could be written on my tombstone.

Or be the title of the movie of my life:

Terrible Things Happen When You Stop Sleeping! "

Totally right actually. I am not really in the condition to workout but even now, with hardly zero sleep I can profit from exercising or weight lifting, I do not have to do that for a long time or with a lot of weight, just DOING something helps a lot. It helps to sleep, it regulates the way I am breathing, its distracting,... and I watch a lot of series on netflix, one episode is about 20 minutes, and I roll about the carpet like a manatee...

Happy for you!! could you install a treadmill around your house or get a bike?

That's scary! I recently lost sleep for months because of a pill causing terrible itching all through the night. I looked like hell, I started getting really cranky, and basically didn't like the person I had become, even though I must have gotten some sleep.

But what's the solution??? I couldn't take any pills because my bp is so reactive. Finally, the itching has gone down to a more manageable level.

It's always been said that a lack of sleep can cause Alzheimer's. Sleep is VERY important, yet benzos make insomnia worse. That's one of the reasons they SHOULD NOT be prescribed long-term.

😬😬😬

This is terrifying information because there is not a damn thing we can do about it! You don't get good REM sleep while on benzos and then you can't sleep when you off them.

I guess following FG ideas about getting sleep any way you find helpful (healthfully) is the name of the game. I gotta step up my exercise game, for sure!

Two out of the last 4 days I did 45 minutes on the treadmill. Both nights after hitting the gym I slept like a rock and woke up in what was basically a window. Both nights where I didn't go to the gym I slep horribly and woke up feeling like my head was filled with poisonous sludge.

I think in my case some of my recent sleep issues might have to do with being on the keto diet since eating low carb simulates the brain and increases energy. I felt better than I have ever felt in my life when I started the diet earlier this year and that happened to directly coincide with the time I was building my new office so I was getting a ton of exercise then as well. As soon as the office project was done I sunk back into a wave and have been there ever since. I also started feeling especially bad a couple of weeks ago when I started spending a lot more time behind my desk. It is starting to look like the keto diet is going to do really good things for me, but ONLY in conjunction with daily exercise.

I have a gym membership but today after waking up feeling poisoned again I came to the realization that I am going to have to have a more convenient way of staying active if I am going to have to exercise daily so despite not being able to afford it I ordered an exercise bike with a desk. That way I can get my exercise in while I work or watch tv.

I just googled exercise bike with a desk and those look really cool. I hope that goes well for you!

I have been wanting to rig up a treadmill with a desk but I just don't have enough space. Been looking at the cycle desks for awhile also but I hesitated to pull the trigger cause I know it is going to be hard for me to sit on that kind of seat for long periods of time. Might have to make some modifications but I am going to make it work somehow.

My tombstone is going to read, hey, you’re stepping on me!

Really though FG I couldn’t agree more. My pdoc has always said sleep is the key to healing. I know if I don’t get the required amount, I get terrible headaches which i never got before, nausea and feel like such total crap I have trouble getting out of bed. This means I have to get rid of my stupid cat, as he wakes me up every morning at 4 am. I can’t get back to sleep.

I am absolutely convinced that a good portion of our problems stem from or are at least greatly exacerbated by lack of sleep or poor sleep. Not that I have any kind of solution for that if the sleep problems stem from the cns injury that was caused by the benzo, but I think that anything and everything we can do to improve our chances of getting good sleep is one of the best things we can do for ourselves while we are healing.

FG, I'm curious have you investigated various strains of cannabis related to sleep & relaxation? I've read about some such as this:

I am not completely opposed to it but at the end of the day it is still another drug, natural or not, and it just seems like a sketchy idea to try to medicate drug damage with another drug.

A partial quote from a National Institute of Health article on Oxygen:

"Oxygen is one of the most widely used therapeutic agents. It is a drug in the true sense of the word, with specific biochemical and physiologic actions, a distinct range of effective doses, and well-defined adverse effects at high doses."

It may seem far fetched but an essential element for life, oxygen, is classified as a "drug" too.

I'm just guessing but, not many people here on BB or anywhere on this planet are opposed to breathing oxygen within safe ranges of effective doses are they?

Edit:

I understand your point but the glaring different here is that oxygen is absolutely essential for life. You can't live more than a few minutes without it.

Oxygen is also known to be safe and although MJ is certainly safer than a lot of these synthetic pharmaceutical drugs, it isn't completely benign and some people have had some pretty severe adverse reactions to it.

Agree, you need to know when and how to dose it. I had some good effects to overcome my adrenal fatigue.

Who defines what the proper time and dosage is though?

Like I said, I am not opposed to it but there is probably more information available about the negative effects of benzos as there are the effects of MJ. So no one really knows. I suspect that it is probably pretty safe for the average person used in reasonable quantities, but at the end of the day we just don't know. Severe reactions are definitely possible with it and those of us who already have a CNS injury need to be especially careful.

I have been informed by a specialist regarding recovery after coma for people with damaged brain. That is the only reason I tried it and it was very successful though. My only problem was that I had to inhale it through a mask made of plastic and I could not tolerate the smell of the mask. Of course. Because I never can get the easy solution there has always to be something, right :-X

Sleep is sooo important. Maybe a hot shower at night, a similar and proven routine.. I turn everything off by evening, and fill the last few hours of my night with uneventful stuff, even if that means avoiding live events for the next morning.

With lack of sleep, we (I) make bad decisions that could make recovery even more difficult, or distorted.

OH my giddy aunt!  Heck, yeah..  loss of sleep is the absolute worst.  For me all the muscle cramps made it impossible to sleep.  Bananas and grapes for their extra potassium along with potassium/magnesium/calcium vitamins really helped stop the cramping enough to get some sleep.

I still don't sleep for an entire night but that's been true for most of my adult life long before the Xanax or withdrawals.  Withdrawals simply made that worse.  I went from having about six hours of sleep to almost no sleep for days on end.

Exercise definitely helps but I'm an old broad now and some days getting up from the chair takes a fair amount of swearing.  RA does not age well.  I know you guys are saying 'no' to cannabis but I have RA/rheumatoid arthritis and I'm hoping the stuff I now grow  (Yes, Grannie has an herb garden :).. Yay for my new MM card. )  will help with that pain and keep me off pain pills.  It's my firm hope that it also helps with benzo sleeping, too.  I'll let you know after I harvest!

Note:  I'm not saying cannabis is the answer for anything, mind you.  But, for me, it is way healthier than going back to pain pills like oxy.  Late stage RA is extreme chronic pain.

Love to all,

Grannie Libble

I am sure the world would be a better place if it would be more quiet everywhere and the people would allow themselves just to sleep.

Where I live they have done some tests and found out the traffic has an impact on sleep even when the people tell that they have a  good sleep. For me it was logical, but we always need a study to be done instead just listening to our brain...

Most of the angry people I see at work just need to sleep. Really.
