hang in there friend. the only way is through. seek an addictions doctor.. they may be more helpful and educated in this area. look into a drug called Acamprasate and consult your doctor. supposed to ease withdrawals

I don't think Quiet needs to be told to "seek an addictions doctor".  You know nothing about her circumstances.

And as for the drug you so cavalierly "prescribe", here's some info on it:

Acamprosate, sold under the brand name Campral, is a medication used along with counselling to treat alcohol dependence. Acamprosate is thought to stabilize chemical signaling in the brain that would otherwise be disrupted by alcohol withdrawal.

How in h**l do you think this might be helpful to Quiet? Is she in the throes of alcohol dependence?

Have you taken it? Do you have personal experience with it? No?

We don't "prescribe" drugs on here. We are not doctors. If we've taken something that proved useful to us, we say so. Period.

I'm sure you are trying to help, but it would be more useful to restrict yourself to general expressions of commiseration (which are always appreciated) unless you have something specific that worked for you which you want to tell us about.

Hello 50shadesofdre,

While your intentions may be sincere, it's very important to follow forum rules and guidelines when posting.  You can't know this person's history or circumstances so it is potentially dangerous to suggest adjunct medications. You may discuss your personal experience and what medications may have worked for you, but please refrain from telling someone to 'look into' a particular drug.

Additionally, most people here took the drug as prescribed by their doctor and became iotrogenically dependent, this is quite different from being addicted and/or labeled an addict.

Please adopt a non-prescriptive writing style. Relating your experiences, stating options, or posting suggestions of what other members might do are all welcome. However, advising members of what they should or must do is against the ethos of the BenzoBuddies Community. Nor should you attempt to 'diagnose' medical problems or suggest medical treatments to other members. This policy also applies to members with medical qualifications. A more detailed explanation of this policy can be found in our Guidelines Regarding the Giving of Medical Advice document.

hi quiet and piano... i clearly wrote to consult a doctor. i wouldn't recommend anyone take anything. i'm not qualified to do so. but neither is anyone on this site. i'm just assuming that an addictions doctor would know a hell of a lot more than anyone here or most regular doctors.

you should know what alcohol addiction is very similar to benzo addiction and if you dig deeper into acoprasate, you will find out it is used in benzo withdrawals as well. it is a glutamate antagonist. obviously do your research you can start on wikipedia.

i would've considered taking anything to help me during my withdrawals

Look man, I'm pretty reasonable. I actually didn't really mind your first post; it seemed you were trying to help. You're words were very cordial, and I think well-intentioned. So I'm not saying this out of anger or irritation; I'm saying it because you might inadvertently harm other people. And I believe you don't want to do that.

Wise women (among them admin) asked you to stop talking about things you are not an expert in or have no practical experience with (or at least haven't shared). I believe they have given you similar advice about the rules and customs of this site in other places too. And yet you continue to do so in this same thread. So, here is why every single thing you said after a certain point in your post was not only advice you had no business or expertise to give, and was also contrary to the rules of this forum, but also was potentially dangerous if followed.

You told me to consult an "addiction doctor."

First of all, an addition doctor is who I consulted when I first tapered, and they rapid tapered me, induced akathisia and many other horrible symptoms, and almost cost me my life. I had to reinstate and now things are quite challenging. Addiction specialists, in my opinion, are actually some of the worst equipped to get people off benzos. Mostly because they seem used to dealing with drugs whose withdrawal symptoms last a week or two at most, and because they have often bought into the rehab centered approach of rapid tapering and cold turkeying, along with using adjunctive medications that have not been shown to work for benzo withdrawal. Also, because they deal with addiction, and, like you, do not recognize benzo withdrawal (for the majority) as a matter of dependence.

From that point follows this second one: I am not addicted to benzos. I'm dependent on them. If the difference is elusive there is one essential difference; "craving." I do not crave benzos; I loathe them. So why would I go to an addiction specialist (I only did so in the first place because I was ignorant of all this back then)?

Thirdly, no one has any idea if "Acamprasate/acoprasate" is helpful. Lot's of things are glutimate antagonists. And lots of things are used in Benzo withdrawal that will hurt you or even kill you. Doctors will suggest the strangest things, I guess because they are at a loss for what to do. The fact that a thing is used is not an argument. If you want to convince people, start a thread and argue its merits, don't just assume them.

Fourthy, if you want people to take you seriously, try and spell the name of the drug correctly at least once. It took me 10 minutes to find the thing on wikipedia because it's actually "Acamprosate." This is a little thing. I spell words wrong all the time. Dyslexia is a pain, and benzos make it even harder for me. But if you want to argue with people who have been members of a forum for a long time and also help to run one, it helps your credibility. (I don't count myself among them, I'm just some dude who looks for help).

Fifthly, be careful citing wikipedia as your only source if the subject is controversial. Especially when it doesn't say what you think it says. This is what it reads "[Acamprosate] has been purported to open the chloride ion channel in a novel way as it does not require GABA as a cofactor, making it less liable for dependence than benzodiazepines." It is arguing that it is a better way to get off of alcohol than Benzos; it makes no claim for getting off benzos. I am not trying to get off of alcohol. I'm trying to get off benzos. Once again, I do not drink alcohol and haven't for years. The simple fact that they are similar, does not mean they are the same.

Sixthly, saying "I would've considered taking anything to help me during my withdrawals" is true of most of us, but also horrible advice. Telling desperate people to take desperate measures is extremely dangerous.

Finally, here's what I really liked and appreciated about your first post, "hang in there friend. the only way is through." That's all anyone needs or expects out of you. I think you want to help. I think you want to find a solution. I think you want to spare me and others pain, and I appreciate that.

When you give advice on this forum it is best to stick to things you have actually tried, so that you can relate your experience. That's how we learn, and it's where what credibility we have comes from--our own lived experiences. It doesn't seem like you've taken this drug. If you have, again, start a thread and discuss your experience. Or at least mention that experience when giving advice to others. There are things in that wikipedia quote that I think are interesting, but they deserve discussion, not desperate experimentation. You could add a lot by gathering any available research and sparking some dialogue about its potential use.

Again, I really do appreciate your concern. I believe you're going to be a valuable member of this forum; it just takes some getting use to the boundaries. It took me some time to learn as well, and I still mess up. It's okay, let's just move on.

FYI - addictions doctor is the one who ripped me off benzos in 3 days.

I went to her specifically and she said it was equivalent to heroin withdrawal.

I went to an addiction facility across the US actually, and once she stopped my meds I was trapped at that facility through acute withdrawal.

(YES, I have severe PTSD from this!!!!!)

I would NOT suggest addiction docs - not all of them are 100% informed either
