Benzo-Induced Harm: The Nameless Problem

[Ms...]

Recommended Posts

Another excellent addition to the BIC blog.  Thank you MAB!

As noted in the above blog post, patients who wish to discontinue benzodiazepines frequently report a “frustrating inability to find any meaningful help with the same system that prescribed them benzodiazepines to begin with.”

One of the most frustrating challenges patients face is that the benzodiazepines they wish to discontinue are not always available in formulations that make safe and gradual tapering possible.

For example, in the US, the lowest dose prescription tablet for clonazepam is 0.125mg (that’s still a hefty dose of this potent benzo).  A prescription oral liquid solution of clonazepam is not available at all (even though prescription oral solutions are available in other countries so the “know how” is available).

Is this very real, very pressing need on BIC’s radar screen?  If not, what could/should members of this community do to get it there?  Or, would BIC be willing to help us identify next steps we could take to reach out to appropriate “others” for assistance with meeting this need?

PS If I heard him correctly on the recent Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symposium videocast, Dr. Steven Wright uses the term “Benzodiazepine Injury Syndrome.”

Once again, thank you for your ongoing efforts to address one of the most important topics in the benzo support community. I have been saying this for years so it's good to see that people who are actually increasing awareness of the benzo issue are speaking up about it as well.
