Little Italy - Benvenuti !
« on: July 23, 2019, 10:33:56 pm »

The problem with the world today is that there aren't enough Italians.
They're just not making them like they used to. They're a dying breed -
which is a shame, because what this place needs right now is a Little Italy.
Non è vero?

We need some Italian food and Italian fashion, Italian vacations and Italian
pictures, Italian stories, Italian jokes, Italian cinema and Italian
music. Speaking of which, I'll get things started with a fun little song.
Fun - but also romantic, and elegant. That's Italian.

L'Italiano

The Gypsy Queens

Buongiorno Italia gli spaghetti al dente
e un partigiano come Presidente
con l'autoradio sempre nella mano destra
e un canarino sopra la finestra

Buongiorno Italia con i tuoi artisti
con troppa America sui manifesti
con le canzoni con amore
con il cuore
con più donne sempre meno suore

Buongiorno Italia
buongiorno Maria
con gli occhi pieni di malinconia
buongiorno Dio
lo sai che ci sono anch'io

Lasciatemi cantare
con la chitarra in mano
lasciatemi cantare
una canzone piano piano
lasciatemi cantare

Buongiorno Italia
buongiorno Maria
con gli occhi pieni di malinconia
buongiorno Dio
lo sai che ci sono anch'io

Lasciatemi cantare
con la chitarra in mano
lasciatemi cantare
una canzone piano piano
lasciatemi cantare
perché ne sono fiero
sono un italiano
un italiano vero.

Lasciatemi cantare
con la chitarra in mano
sono un italiano
un italiano vero.
Good day Italy, the spaghetti al dente
and a partisan as president
with the car radio always in the right hand
and a canary above the window

Good day Italy with your artists
with too much America on the posters
with songs with love
with heart
with more women, ever fewer nuns

Good day Italy
Good day Maria
with eyes full of melancholy
Good day God
you know that I am here too

Let me sing
with the guitar in hand
let me sing
a song softly
let me sing
because I'm proud
I'm an Italian
A true Italian

Good day Italy that's never afraid
and with the mint shaving cream
with a pinstriped suit on blue shirt
and the moviola on Sundays in TV
Good day Italy with the caffe ristretto
the new socks in the first drawer
with the flag in the dry cleaners
and a 600 bodywork down

Good day Italy
Good day Maria
with eyes full of melancholy
Good day God
you know that I am here too

Let me sing
with the guitar in hand
let me sing
a song softly
let me sing
because I'm proud
I'm an Italian
An Italian true

Let me sing
with the guitar in hand
I am an Italian
An Italian for real

Pasta e fagioli (pronounced [ˈpasta e ffaˈdʒɔːli]), meaning "pasta and beans", is a traditional Italian soup. Like many other Italian favorites, including pizza and polenta, it started as a peasant dish, being composed of inexpensive ingredients. It is often called pasta fasul (fazool) in the United States, derived from its Neapolitan name, pasta e fasule.

Recipes for pasta e fagioli vary, the only true requirement being that beans and pasta are included. While dish varies from region to region it is most commonly made using cannellini beans, Great Northern beans or borlotti beans and a small variety of pasta such as elbow macaroni or ditalini. The base typically includes olive oil, garlic, minced onion, celery, carrots and often stewed tomatoes or tomato paste. Some variations omit tomatoes and instead use a broth base. Preparation may be vegetarian, or contain meat (often bacon or pancetta) or a meat-based stock. The recipe varies greatly based on the region or town in which it is prepared, depending on available ingredients. The consistency of the dish can vary, with some being soupy, while others are much thicker. For instance, in Bari the dish is thicker in consistency and uses mixed pasta shapes. It also uses pancetta in the base of the sauce. Other varieties call for the beans to be passed through a food mill, giving it a stew-like consistency.

The word for "beans" varies in different Italian languages, e.g. fagioli [faˈdʒɔːli] in standard Italian, fasule [faˈsuːlə] in Neapolitan, and fasola [faˈsɔːla] in Sicilian. "Pastafazoola", a 1927 novelty song by Van and Schenck, capitalizes on the Neapolitan pronunciation in the rhyme, "Don't be a fool, eat pasta fazool"; and the song "That's Amore", by Warren and Brooks (popularized by Dean Martin), includes the rhyme "When the stars make you drool, just like pasta fazool, that's amore".

Tu vuò fà l'americano is a 1956 Neapolitan language song
by Renato Carosone and Nicola Salerno. Carosone performed
the song in the 1958 film Totò, Peppino e le fanatiche.
The song was later performed by Sophia Loren in the 1960 film
It Started in Naples. It was also performed in the 1999 film
The Talented Mr. Ripley. The song is a satire of the Americanization
that occurred in Italy in the early years after World War II.

You wear your pants with the label out
and your cap with the brim cocked up
You go strutting down Toledo Way
Like a gangster on parade

You wanna make like an American
like an American, like an American
Listen, who's making you do that?
You wanna live so trendy and cool
But when you drink your whisky soda
It makes you queasy
You dance to rock&roll
You play baseball
But the money for your Camels
Where did you get that?
From your momma's purse!

You wanna make like an American
like an American, like an American
But you're born in Italy!
Listen, you can't change that
OK, Neapolitan?
You wanna make like an American
You wanna make like an American

How can those who love you understand
if you speak to them in half-American?
When you make love under the moon
What's the point of saying "I love you"?

You wanna make like an American
like an American, like an American
Listen, who's making you do that?
You wanna live so trendy and cool
But when you drink your whisky soda
It makes you queasy
You dance to rock&roll
You play baseball
But the money for your Camels
Where did you get that?

If you’re talking about NYC there ain’t no Italians in Little Italy either. That neighborhood has been Chinese for like 3 decades now. I was there last night with my wife and her family for dinner. There were about 40 of us there, mostly Italian. I was joking that aside from the wait staff the entire Italian population of Little Italy was right there in that room. Lol.

Yep. Last time I was there, the restaurant I ate in was owned and operated by Arabs. And you're right, it's Chinatown all around. But still, to walk through Little Italy during Christmas season is a wonderful thing.

Oh, and I should mention that the vid I posted above, Tu Vuo Fa l'Americano, is performed by a French Jew from Tunisia. Hah! Well, it's still a great video.

So on other threads some can remember fearing their father’s belt. I guess this is the thread where we can all remember the wrath of an Italian mother’s wooden spoon! Lol.

That's right, and she didn't even have to be your mother!
