Dr Neil Nedly..?? Genuine or marketing con?

Went to a free anxiety and depression workshop... Half the night was about selling the books we will need to buy "tonight" to do the course "properly" -No biggie, but it felt very "multi level marketing" type stuff...

Why I ask here is because it all sounds, and he looks, all too familiar... -Perhaps from links posted on BB, idk...??

Kinda seems like he has the general idea, thus far..

The BB search function isnt being too helpfull.. :(

Thanks guys..

Marketing con. Why would you fall for this scam?, they're looking to profit.

Thanks, But why is it a scam, the info seems to be fair...?? Profit for service or product isnt an unusual concept...

Have you any experience with his work?  Obviously this isnt about our benzo or med situation, or a "cure" for us here on BB...  Are you saying his actual info is shoddy too..??

I guess im wondering more about the relationship between the people using his work and running the programme/seminar here in Australia, and Dr Nedley..

Is this his common bussiness model..?

-Something doesnt feel right..  I should say, This was all strongly promoted as a FREE community service....  And I didnt like the way it suddenly changed, the tactics, nor the look on some peoples faces when they had to suddenly come up with a few hundred $$ that I assume wasnt in the budget...

Thanks..

Dr. Neil Nedley is a well-known and respected physician.  This man truly knows what he's t talking about.  He's written several books and I've met and visited with him personally.  Unfortunately, his books are expensive but worth it.  He is a Godly man and an expert in depression and anxiety and comes to it from a Godly, Bible-based approach.  One of the books I own that he's written--Proof Positive--has an entire section dedicated to psychiatric drugs and benzos in particular and what they do to the brain and how they change people's lives.  The unfortunate part for me is that I didn't follow his advice and was uneducated about benzos till it was too late.  I don't know his current research of what can be done once damage has been done.  His seminars are expensive but worth it if you haven't already worsened your life by resorting to these damaging drugs--for whatever reason.  He is a Seventh-day Adventist, Christian man and is well versed in Scripture for healing as well as a holistic approach in addition to dietary reform.  Anyone who says it is a scam is wrong, wrong, wrong.  I know that we live in a world where we have to be serious about what we try, but if you can afford his books or seminars, do it.  I have no vested interest in this post.  I have yet (this is the first time) to see anything on this site concerning Dr. Nedley.  I have been on this forum since 2012--off and on--and am actually happy to see someone who has been able to experience his work.  Dr. Nedley is not able to go everywhere so must have others' putting seminars for him but this man knows his stuff!

Lol, I think I have already worsened my life by needing meds... :(  But there are plenty of reasons beyond that (and myself) as to why im interested...

Thank you so much for your reply... It is very valued...  I tend to agree, His work seems sound enough, but the delivering organisation is a bit sketchy... -I can work with that... :)

Again, Thanks for your time and experiences...

I'm interested in the organization who put on the seminar that you attended . . . ?  Are you comfortable revealing that?  I'm wondering if they are associated with his organization or if they are independent of him  . . If you can, I'd like to know.  You are in Australia?  I am quite familiar with Weimar, although have never been there as I live in the US.  It's too bad that things have to be so costly and often that eliminates some of the most needy getting the help they need . . .

  • 1 month later...

Just a quick update..

Its all going quite well..!!

They did quietly offer me the work books for free if I couldnt afford them.. (I can, but havnt at this point) It seems most info is available online anyway..

My problem is that while I tick Every box for depression, I am very cautious as to where I lay the "blame"...  Much of the info and strategy can only help as healthy life practices, but for me its very clear that its my chemistry thats broken, so while that is healing, I feel that I have to be very careful not to set myself up for failure due to my bodys limited ability to respond.. This particularly relates to the specific foods they promote to help modulate our bodys chemistry to combat depression.. My body did not respond well to a couple of things I tried while in this fragile state..

I do see great value in his work, some for now, but some will have to be revisited at a later date..

Right now my body is just not capable of following the programme properly, infact it could be detrimental... I discussed this with them and they are very supportive...

I am very glad I stuck with it, and have plenty to work on.. My main reason for doing the course was after all, to get out of the house and socialise in a safe and productive environ, and that has been a great success.. :)

A few more weeks to go..

:)

Hi Cantfly,

Glad to hear you're having some success with the program! I'm sure that getting out there and socializing with others in a positive and supportive environment can be very beneficial for our healing. I've actually been curious about Nedley for awhile. I do know a little bit about him since he actually belongs to the same church denomination that I grew up in, but not much more than that. I'm certainly not intimately familiar with his work by any stretch. I remember researching some of his books awhile back.. almost bought one or two, but they were quite expensive and they weren't available on ebook at the time. From what I've seen, he basically takes a lifestyle approach to depression, anxiety, and other mental/physical health issues. I do know that he's definitely anti benzo, and from what I can tell, he's a big fan of ADs either. It seems that he is not terribly fond of any psych med, and prefers to first treat with lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, ect) and addressing potential nutritional deficiencies. But I don't believe he's 100% against all psych meds, and is certainly not dogmatic about it. It seems like a fairly balanced and reasonable approach, and I can appreciate that. Also pretty sure he supports a whole food plant based diet, or at least primarily vegetarian/vegan.

I actually saw an episode of this counseling television program that aired on youtube awhile back where the guest on that particular episode went to Nedley's facility to get help with getting of his benzo. It seemed like the guy had a pretty rough, but fairly typical acute WD period but seemed to heal relatively quickly after that (maybe 3-6 months). All I remember is that besides the nutrition and counseling stuff, they had him doing some sort of contrast water therapy where he would go back and forth from jacuzzi temperature water, and then to very cold water (maybe 60 degrees) several times back and forth, and do this every day. Something about resetting the nervous system, I believe. I think he was at the recovery/wellness center for a little over 2 weeks total. I also remember him saying that Nedley had put him on zinc and B12 and maybe something else, but I believe that was based on that guys individual labwork. It was definitely interesting, and kinda had me wondering how much Nedley knows about benzo WD (although I know that's not necessarily his specialty) or if the guy on the show was just one of the more fortunate ones. I could probably find and post the video if anyone is interested, but I'm not sure if that's allowed.

Anyway, would love to hear how the program is going, and if you happened to have bought any of the books, what you thought of them. I might reconsider making a purchase at some point. Hope it's going well!

Take care,

Pharmguy

Hi Pharmguy,

Sorry, was holding off till I had attended again, but I have missed the last two weeks due to this damn flue/wd stuff...

But you seem to give a pretty fair assessment of things...

Ohviously there is lots I dont know either, like his in person treatment and understanding of benzo or med complexity when things go extra bad..  But I would guess that one could be in far worse hands... I dont think he would struggle with general Ashton principals at the least..

Yes, he does focus on specific foods and their combinations, perhaps in a kinda modulating way, and combines this with an active and wholistic lifestyle approach...

I did have a good look at one of his main books, and while it was generally pretty good (imo), It didnt have the chemistry depth I was looking for if I was to purchace... But that was a pretty specific "want" on my behalf too, so there is that... Also these are not such new concepts for me, but were I to seriously commit to a programe of this nature at some point post med, I feel it would be well worth considering...

My only real reservation is that I now have a renewed respect for the power of certain foods, and Im not so sure it wouldnt present problems for particularly sensitive people in, or directly post WD..

But thats my suspicion, -not fact..

Hope that helps a little...

:)

Sorry to hear you've been feeling under the weather, Cantfly.  Yeah, I'm definitely curious about his benzo knowledge. I know he doesn't like benzos, but that's about it. He runs some sort of depression and rehab treatment center called Weimar Institute where he applies the diet/lifestyle principles found in his program to the residents there. I think it's typically short term, like 10 days.  Makes me wonder if he supports long tapers and understands the necessity, or whether he does anything different (ie specific diet) for those coming off benzos. The guy in the video I saw seemed to have come off his pretty fast, though, so who knows. If I remember correctly, he said they put him on 'something else' to help ease the transition. I'm guessing valium or librium, maybe pheno. Anyway, as far as I can tell his intentions seem to be good.

Yeah, I hear you on the whole food sensitivities thing. I count myself in that group. You never know which foods might potentially cause issues for those of us going through this process, even food that might be ideal for other people dealing with depression or anxiety. It would be nice if someone came up with the ideal benzo WD diet. Anyhow, hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks..

He did mention he need for long tapers in some instances.. -but that wasnt benzo specific in that context..

Perhaps worth sending him an Email or something..??

Yes I suppose sending him an email would probably be the best way to go about answering some of these questions. Certainly more effective than sitting here speculating about it lol. I don't have any plans of attending his facility or going through his programs, so sending an email would only be to satisfy my own curiosity about it. But who knows.. maybe at some point I'll become curious enough. Until then I might end up checking out one of his books. There's a few affordable ones out there that don't include the entire more expensive 'program'..
