20 Years of Klonopin

[Sl...]

Recommended Posts

I've been taking Klonopin for sleep for about 20 years - a sleep doc recommended it because I was a restless sleeper, kicking, throwing off covers, wakeful sometimes, all of which disturbed my wife on the other side of the queen mattress.  My regular doc had started me on Ativan, suggested I take one of those wired-up-like-a-space-monkey sleep tests, after which the sleep doc switched me to Klonopin which he said was better for my issue (I did not have apnea).

Started at .5 mg but maybe 5 years later upped it to 1 mg where it's been ever since. Only take it once at night & have tried to go back to .5 mg a couple of times but had to go back up after a few days as my sleeping was poor.  I'd like to stop it altogether as I'm now 69 yo & I know from family experience older folks can get pretty disoriented or worse with many meds.

All the tapering charts & advice I've seen so far presume the person is taking a higher dose & 3X a day.  I'd like to taper down without Valium but am unsure of the schedule for my circumstances.

Thanks

I'm 70 and I know what you mean about wanting to get off this stuff.  20 years for me, too.  And, like you, I didn't want to switch over to valium.  I tried that drug once and it was so terribly sedating, I couldn't stand it.

You can split your dose into two a day if you so choose or you can keep it at one a day and taper the night dose that you're used to.  I'm doing a daily liquid micro taper with whole milk and I know many others use vodka or propylene glycol with water.

These links might help you until someone much more experienced than I comes along with answers.
