is it breathing as in from the lungs or  a sensation that you cant breath ?

its only cos I had the later a lot...a sensation that I couldn't breath and gasping for breath....??

But yet I was breathing

Sorry not sure this makes sense

Does opening the window help?

Hello Ahoooo,

The "air hunger" is one of the usual and expected symptoms during the withdrawal. I've had it through all my tapering, specally when I lied in bed.

I understand: it's very annoying the feeling you don't get enough air to breath!

I think anxiety and fear cause this, unless of course you have a known lung problem like asthma. When one feels scared, anxious everything tightens up and that can make you feel like you cannot breathe. Might help for you to learn how to do slow deep "belly breathing." Easy to do and calms you down.

I agree. If you have no known lung diseases, like COPB, odd breathing sensations especially at night, are due to anxiety. It is dark at night. You may be awake and fearing insomnia will go on tonight. Your diaphragm tightens slowly, causing you to feel like you are "breathing through a straw." (Great simile, by the way.) All of this is basic fear, anxiety, and it comes from a tiny part of your brain, the part of your brain benzos "work" on. When you go OFF benzos, that tiny part of your brain goes haywire for a while.

Hang in there, comrades. This does get better.

I had this when I was either trying to fall asleep or as I was waking up in the morning. I’d wake up & just couldn’t believe how difficult it was to breath. Never had breathing issues before. I really started first experiencing it when I was in tolerance w/d just taking a shower. Ur chest just feels heavy & no matter how deep u breathing it just feels like the rest of ur body isn’t getting oxygen. I hated it. It seems to have subsided although I’m only in my 5 month. I kindled before that too. But it’s safe to say my breathing has gotten so much better. To the point where it feels good to exercise.

I never had problems breathing while awake. I could always deep breathe. But it drove me nuts for the first few weeks, because every time I started to fall asleep, I'd wake up suddenly, as if I was choking, then I'd gasp, like I was coming back from being strangled. It was awful. I think I wrote about it way way back. Not a sign of it now or for a very long time, so my thing went away as I healed.
