TMJ/TMD

Yes me.  I have a nightguard made by the dentist and that has been the most helpful thing.  My dentist referred me to a specialist dentist who works with TMJ, and she gave me a prescription for flexeril, which I believe helped a bunch, but it can be addictive and works less if you take it regularly, so I try to use it sparingly.  That same dentist said she wrote prescriptions for klonopin for TMJ, when I told her how my TMJ was caused by klonopin withdrawal.  That was awkward.

Very awkward indeed ahah. My TMJ was actually what started my Xanax use :(

You can see it here: http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=197475.0

I had to give up on muscle relaxants because of acid reflux...they were making my cardias weak (or it was spasming from benzo withdrawal I will never know). I try to cope with magnesium...of course it's not as strong but I really can't take anything.

Damn, that's what caused your benzo use?  I didn't even know what to say to her.  I even came home and thought about writing her a letter or something to try and educate her more about benzos and their addictive properties.

Anyways, the most helpful thing was the nightguard.  Other things that have been intermittently helpful is massages, hot baths, and acupuncture.  I guess basically when the muscles are more relaxed, there's less jaw grinding.

My father said that he was having teeth grinding at night and that he had some anger from when he was younger that he had to deal with and once he dealt with it, it went away.  I feel jealous of how simple that was for him.  These drugs just complicate everything.

I have braces now and my dentist said not to use anything as he wants to be guided by my symptoms to find the perfect jaw position that my previous dentist messed up...I actually never bruxed, I started after the mess up because my jaw tries all night to find a comfortable position :/ My tmj is caused by malocclusion mostly.

I go to a osteopath and find releif.

And yes your dentist should not prescribe these drugs so lightly...you could always tell her my story xD the muscle contractions that I was trying to cure came back 10 times worse because of benzo :/

I have TMJ as well. My jaw and top of neck are constantly writhing and spasming since withdrawal. Night guard doesn't help.

Does anyone feel they are clenching their teeth all the time even when actively relaxing the jaw?

I'm not clenching since I really can't, my back teeth don't touch anymore when closing...I keep my jaw up and to the right so my muscles are really tired. (I feel like I am describing a monster but I assure you nothing strange can be seen from the outside..I feel this muscle tension).

My neck too is tight up to the point that it gives me the feeling that my ear is clogged (i say feeling because a ENT doctor said my ear is fine) and pressing on a certain spot on mi neck unclogs it, strange right? xD plus dizzines and a lot of other stuff but I would be writing a book :/

Thanks!

The muscles in my neck and jaw are far too spring. They feel like they are so tight they are writhing sround trying to find space to expand in to. It feels horrific. My hesd constantly turns from one side to the other. I can't control it. It goes down into my shoulders and then waist and hips.

I'm not actually clenching my teeth but my jaw feels tight like I am.

You could try with magnesium...I dissolve it in hot water, it kinda gives me a little release. I have to try Calcium too as a lack of it can cause cramps.

I just got back from the dentist, new elastics and more tension yay! :/ next week he will put the top braces on (now I just have the bottom). Let's hope that when my teeth are not in conflict anymore I will have less tension as only withdrawal gives me enough of it

I drink a powder dissolved in hot water only when I need it...it's a natural muscle relaxant, the only one that I can take, the no natural ones are too strong and make me feel drugged and sleepy.

Plus I discovered that if I take it a few days before my period it doesn't come with bad cramps :)

I hope to get better too...but I have to address malocclusion with braces if I want to get better.

My neck on the left side is killing me everyday :/

I had this before even the ME/CFS let alone withdrawal.

I was told it is due to my bite being out.

Withdrawal has just made all existing muscle problems worse.

  • 3 weeks later...
I cracked a tooth back in August, with my nightly teeth grinding and clenching.  I am STILL having this tooth taken care of, as now the dentist wants to put a crown on it, and try to avoid a root canal.  It's been so painful and it bothers me so much that I am STILL GRINDING and clenching at night.  I wake up with my teeth together and my shoulders are all tensed up and I have to work at it to relax everything and open my jaw.

Good for you Corwell. I got a referral for braces from my dentist but have not proceeded with anything else.  I am still grinding/clenching at night but I think it is not as strong lately.

Two weeks ago, I got my cavity removed from the cracked tooth, and a new temporary filling put it.  The new temporary filling became loose and I had a terrible stomach ache.    A few weeks later I went back to have the temporary filling put on better, and that night, boom, stomach ache disappeared.  It was mystifying, tbh,  the dentist had no explanation for my stomach ache.  But I can't help but think it was connected somehow.

I keep bothering that same tooth with my clenching at night.  The dentist wants to do a root canal if the tooth still has pain in another month.  I am thinking that this pain I am having now is all withdrawal related and I am real hesitant to opt for a root canal.

Did you have a x-ray to see the root's health to justify the root canal?  ???

I did have x-rays and he said everything was healthy.  He is suggesting a root canal because he thinks the pain will just continue if I have it now.  The pain has actually gotten much better so we are planning to just put in the permanent filling in a few weeks.  Fingers crossed the pain stays away.

Hi All -

I have definitely been suffering from TMJ since I jumped on 2/11/18.  I do notice that I'm clenching my teeth constantly because I am in some kind of pain all day long.  It even happens at night.

I have an overbite already which is contributing to the TMJ.  I am seeing a new dentist and he informed me about a new device that is a palate spreader that does not require surgery (new inventions since I explored this 18 years ago).  I have ordered the device and should have it in a few weeks.  I am also working with a Myo Facial Therapist who helps strengthen your facial and tongue muscles to prepare for the device.  The exercises have helped stengthen my mouth already.  I'm hoping this is a correctable situation along with recovering from this nightmare.

Thanks.  The night before last I had some terrible dreams and I was tense and clenching and grinding my teeth all night.  I really hurt this same stupid tooth.  UGH.
