Loving helps me heal and deal with symptoms:

Warm as Texas sun but often cold as artic glaciers
Eight years of my young life caught between
You brightened all I saw, but not without shadows
You scoured out my soul, but left a reservoir
I accept the bitter blessing and the sweet curse
A tear of joy, a tear of heartbreak, equal in depth

One minute in my twenty-sixth year, a turning
You were leaving and all hope followed you
The last goodnight, the last shutting of the door
A flooding sadness filling me, drowning me
But then you did not walk around the coffee table
The accustomed separateness of goodnights

Low and then rising you slowly moved above me
Hands I never held were resting upon my cheeks
And lips that gave me only words touched my own
The flood inside me became like burning kerosene
Fire moved into my throat and quickly spread
And my mind folded in on itself like burning paper

Trauma takes one to places otherwise unknown
In that one minute more was learned than years
Sometimes I lament that I do not recall that kiss
But that gift pried me away from time and self
And placed me into an unbroken wholeness
And infinite Love worth the price of a memory

Time passed and life intruded unwelcomely
Worn tire treads but apparently not enough
And I lost the me you had grown to want
Becoming the me I thought you would prefer
But how deeply I breathed you is still inescapable
How does one leave the road that led you to God?

For Valentineís Day:

Climb the long chain of stairs with me
To the top of the mountain with the ravine below
Where our breath becomes visible in cool air
Dissipating like the winding down of a day
And repeated as a deep and strong exhalation
Of thankfulness to wake beside you in morning

Share with me words both sweet and erotic
Let our lips mingle and taste that salted caramel
For a moment is as much worth as a month
And a memory as much as years to a lifetime
Have you wondered what a second can bring?
Death, life and love, all enshrouded instants.

But I am not endeared to pulses alone
In between there is constant and silent flow
And in that current are carried beautiful lives
Unending melodic duets sung harmoniously
Decades of shared tinder for laughter and smiles
Generations of empathetic tears in spreading rain

And when our hands are curled with age and pain
The home of touching fingers will bring relief
On park benches we will lean our heads together
Fulfilled with sunsets and with lovers and children
And on the day when pulse and flow cease in one
Bread will be broken but flavor will remain whole

You bow to the earth
Lower limbs beneath us
So that we may climb
Along other boughs
Spread wide into Sun
Fine green hair of dreams
Anchored to sturdy wood
Leaves of loving words
Falling gently upon us
Budding again in light
Captured wide in your soul
And fed by the thick sap
Of sweet tempered blood
From the deep heartwood
Within countless rings
Of seasons of giving

Thank you

I can think of no more important quality to humanity than the gift of compassion. We have all suffered through this poison. We have lost chances to make memories for ourselves and others. It seems almost criminal that such a small thing has taken so much and yet I, for one, when I go deep enough into observation, when I see myself from a distance and not so close that I feel myself to be that bluebonnet growing through a crack in concrete, I can view something very different.

Once my compassion was like that of a meteor shower. I would witness some precipitating event and my compassion would flash into being and my soul would be traversed from one side to the other. And this is how compassionís fire would blaze in me, in discrete moments, responding to someone or something. But now I see that my long suffering has transformed me into something much more grand in the way of compassion. It is ever alight in me, it does not burn away, it is not in response but emerging constantly from the core of my being. Now compassion has become a comet, large and sustained it moves across my soul and life, and a trail is left in the hearts of whom I touch.

Out of suffering has come this and I have no doubt that I have gained from and given more to the sacred fire of Godís love because of it. And when I get the missing pieces of my life back, no clouds will obscure me and I will be as beautiful and bright as ever a light has moved across darkness.

For Freeme:

A vein of iron is torn from the warmth of the earth
Placed in fire and furnace and burned to [...] blood
Poured molten into confinement to cool the boil
Beatened and hammered into flattened rigidity
Plunged into the tempering nerve numbing snow
Edges sharpened by the sparks of grinding stone
Leather bound and stretched tight upon the neck
And skin removed and etched to the sharp chisel

Yet out of this torture is shaped the strong blade
Shining steel beauty to carry and cleave conflict
