Sore throat - persistent - anyone recoverd from?

I had a sore throat a year ago during taper and it returned again this year but has stuck around much longer -- since Christmas.

It causes me a lot of anxiety since the pain of it wakes me up from a barely restorative sleep and it has not responded to amoxicillin or cephalxin.  A GP, dentist and ENT doc have all looked at it and have all shrugged their shoulders.  Infected salivary gland?  In the beginning I had swollen glands and fevers with it which is why I agreed to antibiox which I rarely take.  The usual sinus irrigation doesn't help and I have no sinus congestion.

The ENT is recommending a surgeon look at the"vocal" tonsils way down the throat.  WHat?  Thinking they might need to be removed.

So I am trawling for others who may have been through this.  I know its on the list of w/d sxs but has anyone endured a sore throat in w/d lasting more than 2 months in early w/d?  Sick of being sick.    WBB

WBB, sorry you still have a sore throat.  Is your throat raw and red?  It's so strange.

Yep -- it looks red and I have sores in my mouth.  It is weird.

Hi Wanna, I had something like that once and many tests and finally they found out I had a bad yeast overgrowth throughout my body and they gave me a pill to help with yeast in my body and a mouth rinse that I swished during the day and it was a medication, but after some time it finally resolved, but it took a while. I am sitting here trying to think of the names for the pill, and mouth rinse and my mind is blank, but the medicated mouth rinse was thick and yellow. Hope things get better soon for you. :)

That sounds familiar, now I am thinking it was Microstatin or something like that, perhaps the same thing ?.

Hi WBB, I experienced weird throat sensations during my taper off Diazepam and it continues even now at 7 months off. Checking through my tapering charts - I started experiencing burning teeth and mouth problems when I got down to 3mg. I jumped off at 0.5mg and a week later was diagnosed with Thrush and prescribed Nystan mouth rinse. Three weeks later I still had the problem and I was given a 5 day treatment of Ampicillin 500mg and more Nystan. My burning throat problem persisted and I was further prescribed Fluconazole 150mg for 5 days and yet it still continued. My GP then arranged an ENT appointment at the local hospital where I had a camera put up my nose and down my throat and afterwards was told that everything was normal, but I was still in agony. Both sides of my throat at that time had what appeared as a white fur coating. Over the coming months this white coating advanced to cover the inside of both cheeks, across the back of my throat and most of my tongue surface.  Numerous doctors from the practice visited me over the weeks since my hospital appointment and each gave a different diagnosis: auto immune disorder; allergic rhinitis; oral allergy syndrome; mucosal erosion, etc., and I now have a collection of aids such as Ventolin Evohalor and AeroChamber, Certirizine, Mometasone Nasal Spray and Difflam Oral Rinse.

I am sorry to hear that you have an ongoing throat problem that is causing you a lot of anxiety and hope that you will get some relief from it soon.

This last few weeks I had been searching through BB’s to see if others had experienced anything like this, as I am about at my wits end of enduring this burning throat agony. My eyes nearly popped out when I saw your heading… there’s someone else that knows what this is about, I instantly thought!!!

Like you, I have come to the conclusion that this is a w/d sxs but where do we go from here!?

For thrush or candida - these RX are often used: Diflucan, Nystatin (mycostatin), Sporanox, and Nizoral  -  - docs say it's not thrush but I'm not so sure.  I was pos IGG for saccharomyces cerevisiae in  bloodwork and was going to try the nystatin for that but was waiting to feel better before i try another thing.  Guess I should try now.  Maye this is the prob.  WBB

hi - like you I had the camera put down the sinus - no picnic - and ENT said vocal tonsils were enlarged a bit on the right.  I sleep n my right side so i am thinking this thing I have may be lurking in sinus or mouth and draining down.  Who knows.  He recommends removing the tonsils so that bacteria doesn't hang out there.  But, if this is w/d -- that is a serious remediation.  I will say that the sinus surgery I had prior to tolerance has proven to help reduce sinus infection.  But now this throat thing.  Let's hope warm weather will kick it down.  Yes -- mine sometimes feels like someone has taken a hot poker and burned a hole way down my throat.  WBB

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this or not, but I heard an ad on a radio show for Carnivora.  It's supposed to modulate the immune system.  IDK.  It's supposed to be an all-natural supplement and I don't think it revs you up or anything.  Don't know what the ingredients are.  It's been around for a long time.  Good testimonials for it.  Here's the link:

You know - the website is weird but I think it looks promising.  I searched on Phoenixrising (for lots of autoimmune issues) and there was nothing critical of it.  Thanks Becks - I'm going to ask my NY doc.

If none of the ingredients seem harmful, it might be worth a try.  I remember taking some immune-modulating supplements years ago.  They had no taste and didn't make me feel bad or anything.  I didn't need them though because I wasn't sick then.

Hi WBB, when I saw the ENT specialist he suggested to me that the white ‘stuff’ was scar tissue from having my tonsils out, so please think carefully before going down that route. When I questioned how this could be as I had had my tonsils out 67 years previously and it had never shown up before, he just shrugged his shoulders and turned his back on me – he didn’t offer an explanation. My faith in ‘Specialist’ plummeted immediately and my opinion of GP diagnosis has dwindled considerably since my throat issues started.

I think maybe going back to the beginning and considering Thrush as the root cause of this throat problem could be my answer too. Come to think of it, I have read many posts on here related to thrush during withdrawal and after. Maybe like you and Begood, a few more blood tests for me may show up a bad yeast overgrowth throughout my body. Oh, but I couldn’t stand anymore tests I really have had enough of the medical profession!

Thanks for that link Becksblue I think I will look into it, and maybe check out home remedies for thrush and yeast overgrowth.

Wanna I ran into this Link yesterday and liked what they had to say about Yogurt, I do remember that when I worked in STD, we advised women that had long standing female yeast infections to use it as an insert. And when I had my yeast problem I did not have the white patches just the raw mouth and throat.

Well- I still have the sore throat and when I pressed the ENT for an exam by the referred ENT surgeon he equivocated (as docs often do) and wants to do an MRI now.  I'll probably do it since it isn't painful.

Begood - In the meantime I'm going to start the Nystatin and try to get to the acupuncturist which hasn't done anything so far as the throat is concerned but maybe if I keep going something will work.

Yes  Persever- surgery is more serious than the ENT originally let on.  It is one - two days overnight in the hospital!  The pain sounds pretty bad and, obviously, it is very difficult to eat.  The surgery is performed robotically.  Wow.  Even if I need to do this, I am no where near well enough.  maybe in a couple of years.

I've changed from toothpaste to baking soda and don't drink juice or soda anymore.  I wouldn't be so concerned if it weren't for the swollen glands in my neck with this which worries me that it is an autoimmune thing.  However, that warm spell here in the northeast brought some relief so I am hoping summertime helps.

It has put my health anxiety into overdrive, along with some other stuff I post about on another thread.  I'm stumped by this stubborn symptom.  wbb

Wow - I can't believe I still have this problem.  2 scopes and an MRI - and still no answers.  It doesn't look like yeast.  It's just red streaks.  If its viral, I'm screwed.  Can't seem to get on top of it.  W

I had a persistent sore throat for my first 8 months off. I went to the doctor 3 times to get checked for strep, influenza, etc - all turned up negative.  It all of a sudden just went away.

Hope my leaves soon too, SOulman.  2 kinds of antibiotics (not quinolones) threw me into w/d symptoms again.  It looks like a can't treat it with antibiotics.  Sores in the mouth, too.  Weird and causing me a lot of depression -- waking up to this everyday.  It seems year round so airborne allergy doesn't seem to be it.  I'm reducing acidic foods.  Maybe not enough.  :(

Something called Mycostatin is the same drug than Nystatin. In case it is candida type of problem it seems help. For me something called Strefen helped but do not know if it is available in US.

Thanks all -- I believe I had yeast issues in bloodwork quite awhile ago.  I will restart the Nystatin and hope for the best.  This means a low carb/ no fermented foods for awhile.  Fingers crossed. I'm resuming gamma glob infusions this week -- maybe that will get rid of it.  W

Well, after the second scope of the throat last week, the doc said he saw no infection, or thrush -- nothing.  I keep pointing at this red streak in my throat.  I ask if its virus.  He said it was a breathing problem in my larynx?  Ah, withdrawal mysteries.  MRI nothing.

I stopped eating all baked stuff and cereal since folic acid is added to most all flour goods now.  I can't metabolize that stuff.  I will say the pain in my throat is a bit lessened.  I also take Prelief before coffee because of the acid.  I think quitting dairy and sugar is the last frontier.

I got sick on both antibiotics.  Bu the third day I felt I was in acute.  W
