"GABAergic neurons are located in spinal nociceptive circuits suggesting that drugs with affinity at these receptors, including benzodiazepine-like drugs, may provide an alternative to opioids for the treatment of pain. However, systemically administered conventional benzodiazepines fail to produce antihyperalgesic effects, likely due to their concurrent sedative properties."

It sounds as if they want to develop another benzo, this time for hyperalgesia and circumventing the sedative properties.  No mention of people having dependent issues or problems with benzos as well as opoids.

Yes, I think you're right, Terry. I will not be holding my breath to see if they can figure out a benzo-like pain medication that doesn't cause sedation. Even if they do create such a beast, it will likely cause physical dependency, so that would be enough of a downside for many people.
