Doctor's tweet to colleagues:"Cutting opioids abruptly is asking for trouble..."

Dr. David Juurlink, a Toronto internal medicine specialist/toxicologist/pharmacologist/professor, tweeted a simple but powerful statement on what not to do when trying to get patients off opioids:

 

 

This is exactly the kind of thinking process we need to see when it comes to benzodiazepine cessation as well.

 

When this statement becomes "prescribing benzodiazepines for more than two weeks is asking for trouble" we'll know we're making some progress.

Agreed. Let's hope there are already savvy doctors saying such things. I know this particular doctor has great concerns about benzodiazepines, and he has been quoted as saying so. He's also a professor at U. of Toronto, so I'm hoping he's teaching his students about them too. Fingers crossed.
