German Pilot had generalized anxiety disorder

Hi--

my first thought was that he was on prescription drugs, and zoloft has supposedly been found

in his system.

I read that for a long time the FAA (US) banned ssris for pilots, then it was reinstated in 2008?

Hmm......they are making a nice move now overhere......

first they talked openly about THOSE meds and so on......now they must have

realized not to scare the public..... :tickedoff:

*WE CAN'T SAY ANYTHING UNTIL THE 2nd BLACK BOX HAS BEEN FOUND*

CHANCES ARE VERY VERY HIGH THEY WILL NEVER FIND IT....

Um, I thought they found the black box, and that's how they heard the other pilot

It's early for me today...

BTW, I worked for years at the airport, two Pilot friends of mine

took Ativan and Lexotan for sleep, so did Stewards,

so did folks at the Security Department where i was working. :(

Very interesting Claudia.

This was 7 years ago.....I doubt if things have changed.

Overhere you just ask your GP for a sleeping pill,

Benzo-prescription is nothing unusual...

My GP told me thats what they are here for.

I also heard similar reports today and considered some of the same questions as everyone here. There are so many unanswered questions left.

Yes Morreweg - after all of our experiences, that's the first thing that comes to mind. Some sort of withdrawal effect. Sadly, the press (and authorities) will most likely focus on whether or not he was taking his prescribed meds - without taking any discontinuation effects into consideration.  Being a pilot, crazy shifts, time zones, etc, insomnia could easily be a problem, and like you said, a benzo is sometimes the first thing they reach for. It could explain a lot.

But Germany is pretty up on benzos ..... a professor, head of pharmacology at their best teaching hospital, was the first medical professional to tell me I should dump the klonopin, in no uncertain terms.

I'm really curious - I hope they tell us what meds he was taking.

I, too, would like to hear more about his medications. I also hope that this tragedy opens up the conversation about mental health. If his company thought he was "100% fit to fly", then it seems they were missing crucial information. It's sad from every angle.

Yes Qui,

the problem is this....when you start taking a sleeping pill....you are

clueless, no idea about Benzos. It works well, mine did for 6 years....

until I reached Tolerance. At the time i was clueless about tolerance as well....

Most people are aware of Valium, hands off .....its dangerous.

but nobody knows about Ativan, Xanax, Klonopin etc... belongs to the same group.

I don't quite understand how the system here works. There are good

Professors who are well educated about Benzos, but GPs , other Doctors like

Gynocoligsts, Internal Specialists etc. prescribe them too.

Now, that  Internet is getting popular here....things might hopefully change.

Maybe he stopped taking his medications to pass blood tests ....  Didn't he just pass a physical of some sort?

Sadly, we all know where that could lead.

I wonder if they will ever tell us what the meds were - they're telling us everything else - certainly not respecting his privacy in regards to diagnosis.

Yes, I was surprised that so much personal information came out in the way that it did. The 24-hour news cycle forces certain things to happen in a much quicker time frame than it ever did. Maybe we will still hear the details. I hope so, because it could bring about positive change, and it would be good for something positive to come out of this tragedy.

Clearly, there's more to come. First, he was considered "100% fit to fly". Then the details started tricking out, and we found out he wasn't so "fit" after all.

Big respect for the German Attorney-General....Big problem for Lufthansa.....

Insurance will file court case in order not to pay ........people think.

Aside from all of the legal wrangling that will go on, I do hope there's some useful discussion about mental health. It's crucial. It's unbelievably sad for everyone involved, and the ripple effect of what took place on that flight touches many, many people.

Very sad Lapis no doubt ,it is also important for the system to be changed.

Airlines must be aware .....stricter supervision can save lives.
