This 2002 article by Stephen Stahl, MD, outlines the reasoning for using both benzodiazepines and SSRIs for anxiety disorders. Note that he suggests initial, short-term use of benzodiazepines when starting SSRIs, which can then be tapered off as the SSRIs take effect. He also mentions the role that cognitive behavior therapy can play. I believe that you need to have Adobe Reader in order to view the document.
