Hi All,

I'm not sure if someone has already posted this info, but if not, here it is. Check the section on Dependence and Withdrawal. It give a figure of 6 to 18 months for withdrawal. It's a useful piece of literature to print out and share with your doctor.

Best wishes,

Thank you, Lapis! This article is very good. I do wish that their list of w/d symptoms would be longer because there are so many others that aren't considered and are just as important as what's here. The 6- to 18-month time period - the UK is far ahead of the US in recognizing this!

Hey Terry38, have a look at the other article I posted called "Benzodiazepines Revisited". There's a longer list of withdrawal and it's quite comprehensive. It's a dense article, but very good. And yes, of course, it's written by a UK professor. You're darn right they're ahead of us over the pond! I'm here in Canada, and I've not seen too much on this topic.

Solid info about benzodiazepines should be widely disseminated and available to all prescribers and pharmacists. Prevention is the key, because as we all know, it's a brutal withdrawal to get through.

It breaks my heart to think of elderly people who might be on these meds. I'm extremely dizzy and hoping that with time, if I can get through a few more months, I might be out of the woods and healed. But an elderly person would be liable to fall if they went through what I have. Indeed, I've read many, many articles that link falls in the elderly to benzos. So, so sad.

Prevention! Change the prescribing practices. Everywhere.

Vanille, qu'est-ce qui se passe dans votre pays?

Vanille, what is happening in your country?

What kind of information is available in Belgium? I can read French and I found a document from Le Conseil d'Europe, but it's old (1990).

Were you warned about the side effects and withdrawal effects of the medication in advance, as the document suggests?

My hope is that doctors everywhere are much more careful about prescribing the medications.

Thanks for the links! I'm very familiar with CEPUK and have watched all the videos. Great work! I've seen some things on Mad In America too, and Dr. Peter Gotzche's name has come up on a number of articles that I've read. It's good to see smart, articulate people writing and speaking about these issues.
