Manufacturing Addiction -- Canadian women's health article on benzodiazepines

Hi All,

I came across this article when doing some research on benzodiazepines. It's particularly concerned with women's health, but there's some excellent factual info that will likely be of interest to all.

It's a 2004 article, and I'm not sure whether there's been any action since that time on the author's recommendations. If so, I'm not aware of them. But it's good to see that such an informative piece is out there.

Best wishes to all,

Thank you for this, Lapis! The article is very good, but I wonder why, 10 years later, the U.S. still hasn't gotten the message. (I'm not familiar with what's going on in Canada about this.) It's all so mind-boggling, the articles that keep coming up from quite awhile ago and the continued ignorance of medical staff to recognize the dangers.

I know, Terry38! My prescription started in 2007 -- after this article -- and truthfully, I don't think much has happened here in Canada on this topic. If so, I'm not aware of it. My diagnosis of benzodiazepine withdrawal came only after I'd been to many specialists, all of whom could see the medication listed on my intake form. When I DID ask about that medication (as in, "Could it be causing me to be dizzy?), I was told it was "such a small dose". They all minimized it and looked for something else.

From every article I've read -- and I have a PILE of medical articles on this topic now -- they all talk about the side effects of these medications. I think the guidance on these meds re: "short-term use only" has been over-ridden for so long that it's just not an issue right now.

Maybe that recent Alzheimers link to benzodiazepines might get people thinking and talking, though. We can only hope, right? In the meantime, I want to be well more than I can express. I want my life back.

I wish everyone well.
