Found specialists doing just benzo w/d but refuse me.

I found 2 doctors in Toronto who only specialize in long term benzo use w/d. I have written each several times pleading for an interview. Both have refused me because a previous GP gave me narcotics for three years. I left that GP and successfully got off all narcotics in 2009. The benzo w/d specialists understand this but say they cannot help benzo w/d in anyone with any history of narcotic use. The reason stated is that narcotics stay in your fatty tissues forever preventing benzo reduction success. Anyone heard reason for this kind of refusal from a doctor specializing only in benzo withdrawal?

that sounds like utter bullshit to me, and if it's true, I am screwed, as I'm taking narcotics now.  I think it's more likely that docs want nothing to do with someone they perceive as having a substance abuse history, even though of course the narcotics were given by your GP.

That is crap, I hope. About the unsuccessful tapering bc of narcotic use! Me and most people on this board at some point have taken narcotics for surgery or whatever in their past. That can't be true!!!! But Drs can refuse any pt. So that sucks :'(

I've been on opiate painkillers many times in my life (always c/t'd them) for operations, etc., and I've never heard of anything like that. Yes, I was highly addicted, too.

Interesting theory though, for sure. It's worth a google to see if there's anything out there that could possibly back it up.

That's a poor excuse.

I would think more of not wanting to help taper for benzo's when the person is on an antipsychotic than narcotics.

My mom was on tramadol, tapered off while tapering lorazepam and she was recovering well until she reinstated 6 months later thinking it would be ok to take once in a while.

This is my guess as well.  One would think benzo-wise doctors would know painkillers often are prescribed along with benzos.

And I should have added that I've never heard of accumulated narcotics preventing benzo withdrawal, nor can I find anything via google. Not exactly a scientific search, but you'd think there would be something out there. Good luck finding a doc, they're just covering their asses to the nth degree. My current doc doesn't like giving me the diazepam, but he understands and supports that the only reason I'm on them is to get off them, just like you. Believe me, I'd have c/t a long time ago if it was like c/t from opiates, which is nothing.

My doc is self pay, he was already my doc when I realized the benzos were the problem, but I doubt I could have found anyone tied to the insurance system who would have crossed me over. Is that an option for you becky?

I hesitated to say that because c/t'ing off of opiates is by no means, whatsoever, a walk in the park. But since you said it first, uh yeah, me, too.

Docs can refuse patient for a ton of illogical reasons. They are too busy, the don't accept your insurance, your personalities clash too much, he doesn't approve that you have been late before, he doesn't see people your age, he doesn't like the way you dress, he thinks your home is too far away for you to make the drive, he hates the color of your hair, you're too fat, etc. Once he has seen that you have taken a single optiate, for something like major surgery, then that hits the top of the list. He now considers you to be a street junkie. And high faluting doctors don't want to deal with "street trash." They don't want to accept white, or, black, trash. They only want to deal with very rich white old ladies who suffer from "nerves."

When I first saw my pdoc, I explained to him that I had major knee surgery and was given 10 mg of oxycodone 3x daily for three months. So I was addicted to them. And that I had been on 10 mg of K for a decade. All is said to me was, well, we will first get you off of the optiates with a slow taper and then we will kick butt with the benzos. And that was that. This is what addiction specialists are supposed to do. Get you OFF addictive drugs. Not refuse a patient because he is ON an addictive drug. I'm sorry, but I refuse to live where you are. From now on, I will drive around Toronto and not drive thru it.  :) Betsy

I was on opiate painkillers during my wd and I had a VERY hard time but I did it.

It's possible that these doctors are very aware of kindling and this is their method to weed out  troublesome patients.

I m tapering tramadol now. It's not a true opioid but the wds mimic them.  Ugh. Plus ssri wd. I ve been on several narcotics over my 42 yrs for surgeries. There is no way there is a correlation...just no way!! I refuse to believe it.  :tickedoff:
