Pdoc is threatening to drop me!

[So...]

I'm so distraught. I just finished my appt with my pdoc. And he wants me to stop the valium now and give me phenobarbital. I told him I wanted to microtaper off this last bit. But he feels that I'm going too slow and at the rate I'm going it will take me another year to get off. Why the heck he should care I dont know. He's the one who put me on this crap to begin with. He had no problem loading me up on this crap.

I think he sees how this has taken over my life. Right now I'm not driving far distances due to panic attacks. And he feels that I need to get off this last bit of valium in order to get back into life. What he clearly does not understand is that I wont get back into life for a long time if I just drop the valium now and go into acute wd for the next God knows how long! I dont even know if I would survive another ct. I know its a very low dose I'm on but the wd is still very painful.

He told me that if the phenobarbital doesnt work for me than we can publish a paper about it. Yay. He tells me the scientific research is out that phenobarbital is used sucessfully for benzo wd. I refuse the pheno and now he wants to drop me and told me he has to think about whether he wants to keep me as a patient? Is this even legal? He gets me hooked on this shit, never told me anything about the ramifications of long term use and now he's gonna drop me? I'm in shock about this.

Last time I saw him I gave him the Ashton literature. He refused it. Thank God I have a back up supply of 5mg tabs, enough to get me off. However I would have to change to a liquid taper and I'm afraid to switch. But obviously I will if I have to. Oh man, how I hate ignorant doctors. I guess I better start calling around and find someone else.

Hi:

Sorry about this, but your doc can "fire' you anytime he wants to. You can also fire him. I have tried pheno as a way of getting off of benzos and it was 100% useless. A dose keeps you sedated for a few hours and you don't feel anxiety, but you feel the rest of your non anxiety s/x. But then comes time to take your next dose and next dose. Once you have stopped taking it ( usually no more than a week because it's highly addictive), you basically go into a C/T. Most addiction specialists refuse to use pheno for the same reason. Also because it's far too dangerous. If he gives it to you for more than a month, then you have to taper off of it. It's a very dangerous drug. It kills people. That's why criminals who are on death row are given pheno to kill them. Also, unless he gives it to you in very large amounts, it causes insomnia. I would refuse it and since you have enuf benzos left, I would finish my taper on my own or find a smarter doctor. The man must have graduated from med school in the 30s. Betsy

He is older. In his seventies. I'm gonna start my search for a new doctor. No way am I taking pheno.

Good for you sophielove. Steer clear of pheno at any cost. I'm confident you can find another doc, one who has graduated after WW2. Betsy

You have only got a little way to go, so I honestly wouldn't give him the satisfaction of "firing" you. If you can find another doctor that would be great, but you've got your back up plan with the 5mg tablets, and you are doing a dry cut with a jewellers scale. I'm not sure how easy that will be to do with the larger tablets, but at least something can be worked out, even if you do have to switch to a liquid taper.

Try not to stress yourself about all this. You have got some options left to you, and hopefully you will find a more understanding and knowledgeable doctor.
