Pretty Amazing Article in Vogue (I don't have the link)

So I'm paging through my latest issue of Vogue, the cover is icky "Kimye" *ick*, and low and behold there is an amazing story about the dangers of benzos!! Sorry, I can't find the article on line to able to link the story here, but here is what I remember from what I read this morning:

A young woman in her early 30's reports that there is a history of mental illness in her family (mother was an alcoholic with other issues who committed suicide very young) and she her self had a history of being on and off psyche meds since her early teens. She realized that she had a problem with alcohol herself, and I think she did a c/t from that. She started having some significant anxiety attacks (possibly panic attacks) and she made a clear decision to seek professional help.

She found an understanding psychiatrist who put her on an anti depressant and Klonopin. She was very active and healthy and mentally she felt great. A couple of years went by and she had moved to a new state and had an amazingly active and challenging career....

She had been seeing only her regular gynecologist for all her medical needs, she was even getting her K refills from this gyno until one day...... her Dr. called her in and expressed concerns for her repeated requests for early refills of K.  She was recommending that the author see an addiction specialist to get some help.

The author was upset to say the least, she said that sure, she had requested early refills (up to 10 days early) because she was going on vacation or some such excuse, etc.  She recalled that one time she had run out of K when she was away from home and she had immediate freak show sxs that really disturbed her at the time. But wait, she told herself, she never tried to use the K to get high - she was just using it as prescribed: TAKE AS DIRECTED WHEN NEEDED FOR ANXIETY.  Of course, she also took it when she feared she would get anxiety, and for sleep, and when she had a hard day, and when there were relationship issues.......  :D

The new doctor explained HOW DANGEROUS BENZOS WERE AND HOW ADDICTIVE THEY WERE BEYOND 2 - 3 WEEKS!

The author is working a very slow taper, and she now understands that she has to find other ways to manage her anxiety and stress without benzos.

The article quotes Dr. Bregin several times, and may be quite scary to newbies because it mentions things like permanent brain damage and loss of cognitive and intellectual abilities.

Very readable and eye opening, I was frankly shocked and surprised that American Vogue went this far talking about benzos!!! Perhaps this is a breakthrough as Vogue is read by so many women, young and old, who could well benefit from having their eyes opened about what those pretty little pills are doing to them.

If anybody can find a link to this article, or copy and paste it here, that would be great. I apologize for my lack of ability to bring it to you, but I urge everybody to try and read this article and pass it around!!!

Your pal,

M.  ;D

I don't know anything about this article or why their readers rebelled.  I do think that the vast majority of people who take benzos like the idea that they can take one now and then to relax.

Benzobuddies dogma is actually a problem for them.  We represent a threat to their options, amongst other things.  For them, this is our problem, not theirs.

I have a whole lifetime of discussions around the fire or dinner table where occasional use of a benzo is spoken of longingly.

In the context of drugs and addictions, they know the right things to say.  It's just not their truth in more relaxed settings.

I've always understood their point.

They all cancelled their subscriptions because Kimye was on the cover.

Are they both Kimye's?  I truly have no clue.  I don't get out of my cave much.  ;D  What's the interest?    ???

So basically the interest is that they aren't getting along with some others?

Thank you for the info about the article M.  It pleases me to think this was published in a mainstream magazine.  I looked for a couple hours to see if I could find it online, but no luck despite searching on Vogue online page by page.  Maybe someone else will have some luck.

I know! I subscribe to the mag, and I could in no way find a link to the article. So unlike my experiences with "New Yorker"!  If this would have happened to me 2 years ago, I would have thought that I made up the entire thing!  :D

I found the link for everyone interested. I know this is highly sensitive. I've had many arguments with people that I should just trust my doctor!!

I also found an article with a physician quoting, "He wished now he hadn't prescribed so many psychiatric drugs". The numbers here and the UK are astounding for people on benzos. I'm going to print the article and share it. Thank you very much for sharing this article!!

Pharma GABA? Anyone know what it is and whether it can be trusted? Great article but it only touches the surface of how horrible withdrawal is. Thank you for posting it.

Hi,

I'm using GABA every time I taper down for the first five days and it seems to be helping with the symptoms. I'm using NOW brand. I talked to my physician and he said that if it works go for it. As I understand it, although I could be wrong, the GABA receptor sites have to reactivate and time is the main thing that can heal them, besides abstinence of course :)

Re permanent brain damage.

I read some of Peter Breggin's articles and comments re how being on benzos and coming off them can create permanent brain damage and cause early onset dementia.  I was in acute withdrawal at the time, fearful and a real hypochondriac, and I remember thinking what he was saying just wasn't backed up by science or studies.  It's one thing for us here on BB in withdrawal to say we feel retarded or like we've permanently damaged our brains, it's another for a doctor to make such statements without the studies to back it up.  Even if it takes a lot more time to heal than we ever dreamed, up to five years, I truly believe we will all recover.
