[Le...]
How much protein are you eating? Are you doing any resistance training with your muscles? How are your sex hormone levels? All these factors might have a say in this. All the best.
Guest [...]
I have this after I finished Ativan taper, still have Valium to go! Honestly, this is a common benzo wd symptom, also happening with COVID. It will come back, but may take some time. DON’T do strenuous exercise, only light walking and some yoga/Pilates. Make sure you’re getting enough protein and a good diet etc. Good luck. Winnie

[WI...]
My skin is thin and flabby. So do muscles. And my palm muscles are atrophied too. I wonder if my muscles and skin don't make collagen. I thought it might be a central nervous system problem because of the twitching, but there is no paralysis. Is muscle atrophy caused by hormonal imbalance? Is muscle atrophy with weakness common in WD?

[Bo...]
Yes! Benzos themselves( they are strong muscle relaxers) can cause muscle atrophy and then the coming off can do same. I was an avid runner and did some weights 3-4x a week and I’ve lost 20lbs thru this (120-> 100lbs so was scary to me) most being my muscles. also have talked to a few people that this happened to. It’s come back as they’ve moved forward off these and my muscles slowly have a little definition but more importantly to me I’m getting stronger. I was very debilitated by all of this so I just waking up the stairs every day at my house is a big deal and I’m glad! I didn’t get debilitated bc my muscle tone was lost but do this process but it didn’t help I’m sure I couldn’t do much movement. Even people who can tolerate exercise and weight lifting say their muscles have changed even though they are still lifting. I went to a neuromuscular Dr and tests were run to rule stuff out bc internist didn’t like how much mass I had lost… but it’s just this journey. Muscle tone comes back and just know it will start to at some point. Always check into something if it’s concerning to you and will give you peace of mind. But do know that this can be a part of this process.

And,the people with muscle atrophy also recovered. That's good news. I was worried because I didn't know anyone who has recovered from benzo-induced muscle atrophy. Maybe my muscles will come back once I'm off the meds and my muscles tone up. It gives me hope. I would like to believe that this is a journey to recovery. I will try my best to be positive. thank you. WINMK
[mt...]
you are not alone. by far, muscle loss&twitching has been the most debilitating symptom for me. This drug really has withdrawal symptoms like horror. We want to hear from people who have recovered after muscle atrophy. Let's hang together and recover. Are you on any treatment for muscle atrophy? I am eating more and taking amino acid supplements. thank you. WINMK
[mt...]
No treatment. Worked with a nutritionist by going on a paleo diet and a lot of supplements including amino acids and collagen protein. Nothing. Exercising is impossible these days, and it always made it worse for me. Did PT for almost a year, but could not tolerate most exercises and made things worse. Medical investigations done so far revealed nothing for me. Please keep up posted on how it's going with you.
[Bo...]
Have heard from a naturopath who has worked with many benzo patients (Dr Krakoff Connecticut), when I was bad last year that some people add a bit of creatine into their diet to help this issue. I never did try bc I was nervous but might search to see if anyone talks about using it. Ashton also talks how muscles start to rebound but I guess all of us are so different in this that’s it’s hard to know when what symptom will get better for each of us. Hope you can get some guidance but if Drs can’t identify something causing this it’s likely benzo stuff. Do what you can to try to find a way to still move your body but what doesn’t ramp up symptoms and know with time the body will regulate everything again. Hate that time is the word but more that we can try to live around symptoms, we just gotta try to live life best we can thru this. Sending hugs!!
