Opportunity to "Go Public"; FYI

[ha...]

Recommended Posts

I was reading the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) on line and came across an article on antidepressants and death in infants. That is off-topic. What caught my eye was the small grey box in the article that invited people to contact CBC, with an opportunity to "Go Public" with an issue. As I said, the article is off-topic but the invitation is not.

“Evidence of harm outweighs any evidence of benefit,” insisted Barbara Mintzes, a researcher with UBC’s Therapeutics Initiative, a group that analyzes existing studies on the effects of prescription drugs

This pretty much sums it up.

Therapeutics Initiative independently studies all types of prescription drugs.  Here in an article on prescribing practices of Benzos in British Columbia

http://ti.ubc.ca/newsletter/use-benzodiazepines-bc-%E2%80%93-it-consistent-recommendations

and an excerpt:  9.7% of the population of BC (400,000 people) received at least one prescription for a benzo in 2002

Approximately 170,000 people are receiving amounts incompatible with short-term or intermittent use

While the medication maybe off-topic the victims are not.  Here is a revealing article by Margaret Bell on this risks of taking benzos while pregnant.

Hi,

I was thinking that, too, whattodo! - Thinking it might be a good hook for a very good writer. When I get on the CBC sites, I make comments under the articles and read the posts there. I added one about the issue of benzos, too.

I can't imagine being in that circumstance, either. It is so different from being an addict and everyone knowing it would be a problem for a pregnancy but to be doing what you think is right and having it go so long. It is like thalidamide drugs - which is just scary.
